Jackie Brown.

For the first time.

Dude, the quality on Netflix is such shit, especially after watching HD.

All the usual things:
Pam Grier is awesome
Wait, that's Bridget Fonda?!
100% boneable soundtrack

Why didn't I see this in 1997?!

qt's best.

i remember seeing it on the big screen. first impression of disappointment due to a lack of violence was quickly overturned with subsequent viewings. it's PERFECT.

Such a relief. I thought I would be stoned upon admitting it.

And no joke, it was between that and Drop Dead Fred.

I suppose I chose well.

:D

you chose wisely.

It all started with the tail end of Major League today (what is it about the haunting music towards the end?! Such a fucking tear-jerker).

I watched Touchy Feely earlier. My love for Ellen Page runs deep. She's just supportive in this role and her usual witty dialogue is absent. She's viscerally vulnerable. I dug the movie.

So after being informed that I've been missing out for years, I decided the watch Snatch. It's true, how did I miss this movie for over a decade? It's hilarious, it's exciting, the music is good, the cast is great. I'm just glad it had subtitles, or I would have missed half the movie.

Now look, she wants the Heki 2 roof lights, uh, the stylish ash frame furniture, and the scatter cushions with, uh, matching shag pile cover. Yeah. Right. And she's terrible partial to the periwinkle blue boss.

You know, as far as classic comedy films go, I think I prefer silent to talkie. There's something timeless about the films of Charlie Chapman, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd and I think that's because their comedy was so expressive and nuanced due to limitations of the medium - I definitely don't get that feeling from the Marx brothers. Duck Soup is the first Marx film I've seen, and I think I can safely say that they're not for me. The film has some genuinely funny moments and great pieces of wordplay but there's also a lot of cringe-inducing bits, and Groucho's rapid-fire delivery combined with the complete pointlessness of Chico and Harpo's characters makes the already paper-thin plot seem haphazard and lazy. I'm sure at the time their brand of comedy was uproarious, but I don't think it has aged very well. Give me the Stooges over the Marx Brothers any day.

^ "I could dance with you til the cows come home. On second thought, how 'bout I dance with the cows and you come home?" I enjoy Duck Soup if only for it's old-timeyness. And obviously, Groucho's word play.

End of Watch

You almost had me. I thought this was finally it. A hollywood film in which
the protagonist(s) die at the end, after losing the 'final battle', and don't make a comeback or return. So imagine my elation upon seeing both main characters get shot point blank, with a barrage of bullets that would have given Tarantino a boner, without the possibility of being able to ever survive such a thing.
It was there. I was praying for the credits to roll. But nope. LOOK WHO'S THERE! Somehow. Fuck.

I could tell the Training Day dude directed this, very similar feel to this one even with the addition of the 'hand held camera' look they added. Great look to the film with solid action to boot, but writing/plot/etc was bleh. Not even Denzel Washington could have saved that script.

Well maybe he could.

I enjoyed Land of the Blind. It's a dark political satire starring Joseph Fienes, in which tyrannical rulers are overthrown, then replaced by equally tyrannical rulers. I read it as a study of ideology becoming corrupted by the human desire for power. ( as the communism scenes).

It has a similar vibe to Brazil.

Death By Hanging - An ethnic Korean named R, sentenced to execution in Japan for the rape and murder of two school girls, survives a hanging attempt and in the process loses his memory. The state officials present at his execution know they can't simply "re-hang" someone with no knowledge of his crimes, so they re-create them in an increasingly hilarious and theatrical fashion in an effort to restore R's memory.

This is a fantastic film - darkly hilarious, strange, and insightful. The camera work and mise-en-scène are some of the best I have ever seen.
