Film What's the Last Film You Saw? v. Tell Us What You Thought!

it does have a Gattaca feel to it. id try to read the book if you get a chance. for some reason the movie left out integral parts of the story. every time i try to say something positive about this book it just seems to minimize how good it is. i guess one aspect that is impressive is how the author created a 'female voice' for the narrator and you never really question if a female is speaking. its a very deep and somber story which makes you question the meaning of a lot of things. Are the clones any less human than everyone else? What is the significance of art? i'll stop before i sound too melodramatic but its a coming-of-age story as well. :)

I've definitely been wanting to read it for a while now. I have trouble reading sometimes though so it either takes me forever or I just give up.

The Neon Demon

a lesser 3 Women. the film looks great, but it pulls its punches and the story is thin. instead of embracing style over substance, it's got this rudimentary message from a middle-aged man complaining about female youth culture -- not too hip. saw it a while ago, when it first hit theaters. i had paragraphs about it written in my head, and maybe i'll comment further in its thread at some point. it is worth watching.

The Big Short

not much in the way of narrative, but still extremely entertaining. in addition to interesting information and postmodern style, it relies heavily on characterization. great actors given plenty of space to depict those characters, but they didn't have much story to develop in. christian bale as the aspergers guy who started it all is my favorite. i appreciate it pointing out the government is not doing its job of regulating big business.

The Lobster

yorgos lanthimos films all contain a layer of lame social commentary. i'm not sure if the commentaries are sincere, or if they just serve as rails for his twisted plots to ride on. whatever Dogtooth is saying about the influence of media and censorship is boring and pretentious, but that's ok because the movie is fucked up and fun. The Lobster is not fun or even that fucked up, and whatever it is saying about contemporary relationships and love is boring and pretentious. The Lobster is a boring and pretentious movie. reminds me of the weird-society theme that has dominated my dreams ever since living in a college dorm.

Youth in Revolt

cookie cutter indie teen romance. nothing about this movie stands out. michael cera playing a rebellious alter ego would have been better suited for a short film.

searched both titles to read other's reviews, and apparently i'd already seen Youth in Revolt ...

a great cast making a not so great movie.

Maggie's Plan

a plain jane movie about intellectuals living in their bubble. writers writing about writing. this one affirms feelings of guilt for liking greta gerwig. could have been a woody allen film with it's pedantic characters and silly love triangle plot. julianne moore in her character is all that stands out.

Sleeping Giant

the friendship between the cousins is interesting. the dialogue is awkwardly realistic. it makes do with indie level actors, and they do alright. overall the movie has too much of a lifetime tone. when the kid finds his friend stuck in a ditch and then runs away with the car keys is the worst -- you know, to prevent drunk driving. i assume the writer based the weak, sheltered, effeminate boy off of himself. it could have been an alright slice of life flick, but instead it's almost a warning to parents about the bad kids. they do try to make use of the well defined lake town setting, but the depiction of the story is boring.

While I wasn't expecting a great movie, I at least wanted a funny movie with a little originality. Instead, I got the most cliche, cringiest movie I've seen in a long time.
Let's run through the cliches, shall we?

Movie starts by showing main character drifting through her thankless, miserable life? Check

Main character's husband is a complete tool, as to validate her leaving him for the inevitable, soon to be introduced love interest? Check
Love interest introduced? Check and check

Asshole younger boss compounding her misery and making absurd demands c h e c k

Main character has that one moment that makes her say fuck it and breaks free from her cycle? Check, please!

Wacky side characters, one wild, one timid, come along with her on her quest to find herself? Czech

Main character loses her job in all of this wackiness? IOU...I'm out of checks

Antagonist who has been warring with main character finds a way to deflate main character? Yep

Main character finds her second wind and prevails in the end? Uh huh

Main character gets the love interest? You know it

Asshole boss who fired main character uncharacteristically calls her up, begs her to come back, saying the business is crumbling without her and offers her anything she wants to return? Goddamn it, yes!

Movies like this should have stopped being made in the mid 90s or at the very least, by the year 2000. But here we are in 2016, and this paint by numbers bullshit is still being made and making money. To date, this movie has grossed 142 million on a 20 million budget. People bitch and moan about how Hollywood isn't making original movies, that they keep churning out remake after remake. Movies like this ARE remakes. This plot could easily be confused for several dozen movies. A change of gender here, an additional wacky character there, and you have another movie that is the same as Bad Moms. I only went to see this movie because my best friend wanted to see it. I'm seriously considering getting a new best friend.

Watched Spun for the first time a few days ago...

Was pretty good, but idk if it lived up to the hype I heard beforehand about the dang movie, lol.

Concurred!! I watched it on the fly late-night with my girl after an extensive* evening out...We had no idea what it was about nor had we watched the trailer. With our own sense of paranoia creeping up this movie definitely had us going! Do you have any other good movies you could recommend?

I went and saw Cafe Society last night at my local dollar theater. It was the first Woody Allen movie I've ever seen, so I went in with zero expectations and as such, quite enjoyed it. It's got the typical Jesse Eisenberg/Kristen Stewart romance trio BS, with the addition of Steve Carell. I can't say if it's a bad Woody Allen movie, but I can say I never felt the desire to leave my seat. A satisfactory 2 dollars spent :)

I actually quite enjoyed that movie myself. I gave it a second watch the other day and I can't say I didn't like it. Many of the characters are quirky and keep the generic-ness fresh. I think I just have a soft spot for teenage/coming of age flicks though. I really, really liked The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

Star Track Beyond

Really enjoyed this film. Impressive special effects.
I thought the plot was too spotty. Into Darkness was a much better Trek flick in my book. They spent almost all of Beyond on that boring ass planet showing us boring ass cliche moments where Bones n' Spock and the gang all threw out cheesy one liners at us.

I must admit that I've seen it twice already though. I can't help it. I enjoy going to the movies :X

White God (Fehér isten)

significant contrast between the subtle tone and stupid plot. there's a girl playing elle fanning's character from Somewhere -- coming of age girl temporarily pawned off on her distant, unprepared father because the divorced mother is going on a sudden, extended trip. the actress playing her, zsófia psotta, is adorable and talented. the surreal opening scene is captivating. and netflix thought i was going to give the movie buku stars.

so it was disappointing when the movie quickly began following a dog character around, showing his pixar movie adventures like befriending a smaller dog and escaping dopey animal control workers. before ending the movie reverts to back to the super surreal Holy Motors-feel of its opening scene -- plot comes full circle too -- and then thankfully finishes things off with a abstruse cut instead of making the audience sit around as it's neatly wrapped up.

the camera lusts after the pubescent actress playing the lead. repeated scenes of her dressing and undressing in her father’s studio apartment. wearing a wife beater to emphasize that it’s starting. she has a crush on an older boy, so growing up is definitely part of the theme. but it was still surprising how bold the film was in staring at her. it’s hungarian and i can’t think of any other films i’ve seen from hungary. not that any country isn't obsessed with the beauty of youth, but some are more open about it.

this movie didn’t work for me. i didn’t get its silly plot. and while i’m a new fan of zsófia psotta, too much of the movie is focuses on a dog instead of her. something must be lost in translation, because no idea why it is titled White God.

Some of his movies are really good. I've only seen a handful, he's done quite a lot. I enjoyed Café Society, but my favorite movies of his that I've seen are The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) and my favorite Midnight in Paris (2011).

I've found Annie Hall and Manhattan to be somewhat over-rated. I would definitely recommend Midnight in Paris though.

Just to get it out there, our form F&TV is looking for a new moderator, at least one. I see several people here who I'd consider good candidates so please consider applying! As you know this is a pretty low key forum so the time commitment is not huge but it is a good stepping stone to greater things and a way to give back to the community. Would look forward to hearing from you guys!

Saw War Dogs last night. I liked it well enough, but honestly it was a bit boring and I couldn't help a desire to be doing something else. Didn't help there was a baby in the audience, but that's what I get for going to the discount night showings. I must admit though that Jonah Hill gave his possibly best performance yet that I've seen, while his partner whose name I cannot recall was so-so. The plot was very similar to many of the 'get rich quick via white-collar crime' movies I've seen trending the last couple years. Perhaps because of that it didn't feel fresh. There weren't any surprises in the film, it played out exactly as I expected. Bradly Cooper's character was a bit odd and disappointing as well, but then again, I've never liked his acting.

All in all I'd give it a 6.5/10. It had it's moments, and it didn't try to drag on for too long. Worth seeing once, but never again.

I enjoyed Cafe Society last week much more, but then again the two movies are so dissimilar that to compare the two would be foolhardy.

Hail Caesar by the Coen brothers a classic:). Sharp, witty, intelligent and humorous typical of them. Great acting and clever narrative that runs well and Left me really satisfied. Did not think it would be as good as it turned out. Happy out that I watched it today.

I was pleasantly surprised by Suicide Squad last night. Not an amazing movie, but better than your typical superhero drudge. The plot was a bit iffy but they did a good job of making me not really care about it. Real forgettable characters though. I was really stoned the whole time and it probably colored my perception of the film.

Upon further recollection, it was honestly pretty bad. I just liked starring at Margot Robbie and munching on white cheddar popcorn.

6/10

In particular what parts did you find funny?
