What'd you do to get off your butt today? v. "That's not real exercise!"

Yea biking isn't the cheapest hobby unfortunately. I've spent around 1k on my mountain bike, and have a good 'entry level' bike. The accessories, upgrades, and clothing take a nice little chunk of cash too. Then repairs can cost an arm and leg if you don't have the time/tools (more $$)/knowledge to do them yourself.

Right now I'm struggling to slowly build up my tool collection, and the only thing that allowed me to purchase the bike in the first place was insurance money from being ran over last summer on my trekking bike.

Back on topic..went for my normal 2hr round yesterday. Was a great ride, with the rougher parts flowing pretty great.

Biking *can* be a bit expensive, but let's compare that to a car... I use my bike usually to cut down on the cost of gas. I do errands on my bike, buy clothes on my bike and go to my places of hiking on my bike. I actually use it for transportation. It saves me about $20 a month in gas just from the short distances I take it. My car costs about $400 a month, not including gas money. You don't need anything too fancy, just a good, sturdy bike and a couple tools. A lot cheaper than a car, imo. But everyone in this thread probably uses their bikes for exercise and not transportation.

Amanda no knee pain or shin splints since I started trail running

This post gets the S_L thumbs up of approval. Glad to hear it!

I live car free actually, and my street bike is my main form of transportation. I think in the US it would be tough depending on where you live because the infrastructure was organized with little thought to people without cars.

You are right that compared to a car a bike is much less expensive, but if you have a car you have to really use the bike for many things (and learn how to do your own repairs and adjustments which takes many hours as well!) for it to become an actual money saver.

Once I get a better bike, most of the maintenance and tools shouldn't be a problem. Thankfully where I live has about two bikes for every three people so we have handy little places called the Bike Church and Bike Barn where you can go and people will lend you the tools needed for repairs and even help you with repairs for free. So that parts is actually not too bad. Its the acquiring a bike that is a problem.

Not all of us are lucky enough to live right next to a gorgeous area with trails to run on, missy ;)
But one day when I do have my own house it will be.

Like I mentioned above my town is extremely bike friendly, getting places wouldn't be a problem thankfully. Days when it rains or you have to get a bunch of groceries is the only major concern.

Biking nearly every day to work this summer has saved me about $20/week in gas. I've been working there since halfway through May, but let's say June and make it an even three months. That means it has saved me approximately $200 in gas--Granted I typically had a day each week where I drove in, but still--I already chopped off the couple weeks I worked in May. :P So, I've saved about $200. Biking has cost me abouuut $60 this summer: At a shop, I've had my brakes adjusted, flat tire repaired, and a new chain put on. I probably could have done all those myself and saved quite a chunk of change, but $60 isn't that bad.

Back on thread, I biked seven miles to work this morning and seven miles home this afternoon. Had to make quite a few stops on the way home unfortunately. I also foresee biking a few more miles tonight. And probably quite a few tomorrow. :D

I did my easier MTB route today without shifting down out of the middle front cog once. Felt really good to push myself a bit, and notice improvement in that I am able to ascend in a higher gear while maintaining a good cadence than was possible not too long ago.

^ Isn't it awesome when you notice an improvement from not shifting? I love it. :D

Did some errands via bicycle today. Not sure how far it was in total--Maybe six miles?

Yea it is pretty sweet, the only bad thing is when my girlfriend comes with me I have to tone it down quite a bit, and I don't feel like I get much of a workout. Guess I just look at those as rest days =).

Did the longer route yesterday..today I am feeling slightly kaput, but if the sun comes out I go out!!!

walked for 30 minutes with the dog on the bike path while killing time at the laundromat
I don't consider this working out but it is all I got

Lol, I'm in the opposite boat as I am the girlfriend who has to have her partner turn it down a few notches when they go biking together. :P Try and pick up the pace slightly to encourage your girlfriend--If she bikes on her own, she'll be used to going slightly faster than normal with you, and might pick up the pace on her own, and therefore pick it up when she bikes with you. Or maybe my case is just individualized as I bike seven miles each way to/from work, but didn't have the speed 'til I started biking with my girlfriend. :P

At least you did something while other people would sit around. :)

I'm thinking today'll be my rest day, though I don't know for sure yet.

Not to mention, it gives you someone to share the time with. We can't do everything on our own; we'll get bored of it. :)

yesterday did my chest, tris and shoulder. i'll endeavour to get a run out of me today or tomorrow.

Walked around the mall yesterday. (Ick.)

I need to get more active and soon--Before school starts. (Ugh.)

I have an idea. Why don't you take some exercise clothes with you to school and keep them in your car or in a locker? This way, you can exercise in between classes. Trust me, there aren't many people at the gym during the morning / early afternoon.

Edit: I guess I was the only one excited to walk around the mall with you yesterday. :P

Walking around the mall together was fun, but I do not like malls. As I sure hope you know by now. :P

I have ten minutes between each of my classes. Otherwise good idea!
