Like it has been mentioned each Doctor is different, and each case is specific, so i can't give you a 100% accurate answer; but I can explain the situation I'm in and what my treatment was and now is.
I myself have been dealing with sever back pain since February, I cannot sit for more than 1 hour, I cannot stand up for more than 30 mins, or even lie down in the same position for more than 30 mins, and some days I can barely function.
I also have scoliosis, be it very minor, minor scoliosis seems to be kinda common, but what my back problem is I have 4 herniated disks in my back, 2 of which are leaking fluid onto nerves in my back causing increased pain.
From my experiences, they started me out with anti-imflamitory medications such as Vioxx, an arthritis medication Celebrex, and a muscle relaxer Soma, all of which had no recreational value in my opinion; some people may like Soma's, but they did nothing for me. I than went to physical therapy.
The medications they gave me were doing jack in aleviating my pain, so they gave me Hydrocodone 5/500 and a new anti-inflamitory drug Mobic and more physical therapy.
The pain meds this time took a bit of the edge off but nothing to write home about, than they increased my hydrocodone to 7.5/750, and than finaly up to my current dose 10/325 Hydrocodone, more Mobic, more Physical Therapy and an Epidural Cortisone injections, which sucked.
The Hydrocodone really isn't doing too much for me in the pain department since my tollerance is probably through the roof and my Doctor doesn't want to change to a stronger medication, which from everyone I have talked to said I should ask for a stronger medication.
As for Scoliosis treatments I've heard braces are used, PT, electronic stim and surgery, but I'm pretty sure depending on how serious your pain is you should get a pain relieving medication, if it's a "3" they probably will give you crappy medication like perscription Ibuprophen or Vioxx.
If it's more sever you may get a low end strength opiate; such as Tylenol 3's or Darvocet or if it's even higher a 5/500 or 7.5/750 Hydrocodone (which are nice particularily if you have no tollerance at all).
There is a chance if you express you are in extreme pain and you get a liberal Doctor you may score something a bit higher on the strength chart, which I wish my doctor would give me so I could at least sleep at night.
Hopefully this was a little insight and helped you a little bit, hope you feel better.
