To show how alcohol and drugs affect a user's appearance, a website called Recovery.org used mugshots to average the faces of male and female abusers of marijuana, alcohol, and meth.

For each face in the graphic below, 100 mugshots were merged together using software.

To rule out the influence of race and age, only the mugshots of white drug and alcohol offenders between the ages of 18 and 35 were selected, according to the website. You can read more about the methodology here.

In an emailed statement, Recovery.org says that marijuana users tend to have round features and a full face, meth abusers have sagging skin, sunken eyes, and a grey-ish appearance, and alcohol abusers look fairly normal.

The study doesn't offer an explanation for why pot smokers have fuller features, which seems to contradict a recent study suggesting that people who regularly smoke marijuana are skinnier.

I certainly didn't post this because I thought it was a good article.. at firsts with those first rate graphics I thought this was a joke. I would like to see the face of a person who works sixty hours a week for almost minimum wage. May be its just me but when i look at them is seems like I am under a slight dose of all three and they almost look like the same person.. So I guess I posted this cause its just about the worst "article" I have seen, or barring that the worst graphics, which were the feature of the article.

After spending some time here and reading whats out there for journalism.. I think there is great opportunity in portions of this upheaved profession.

Im still confused.. is this what people look like while we are on the drugs or when they are on them.. :sus: Cause I was thinking if I was all lit on booze she would look allot better than that.. speaking of which they need to shut down the giving of people mug shots out to anybody.. now they post them all over the internet and charge people to have them taken down.. not even sure if anything prevents them from putting them right back up.. but I heard they are going way back and posting damaging things that happened decades ago to people who are now wealthy or in positions where it will look unfavorably in hope they will pay to have them removed.

^ It is just a pictorial average of their mugshots, and since some were arrested for possession, it is not about being on drugs, just being associated with them.

Also, didn't it seem that those people were very, very white?
Don't other ethnicities get caught for drugs once in a while? (of course they do, and more often than whites, so why are they not represented?)

I don't think this averaging-photos technique is a very good form of discouragement. All of the faces look quite attractive!

Not only do they look fairly normal, but they look completely random. These pictures seem to say, if you are a random semi-young person selected from the streets, you could look like you do drugs.

Just what I thought! I don't abuse my d-amp rx (because it's really helped me) but I do like to drink.... I could be the guy if you crossed the booze with the amph picture haha. Kinda have the drawn in thin face, but I run 20-25 miles a week.

^ ever noticed how distance runners often resemble addicts? I remember seeing some marathon runners being interviewed on television years ago, and thinking that they resembled heavy dope users (maybe it's all the endorphins? ;))

I find this whole thing rather patronising. I mean, most long term, serious drinkers I've known show it in their faces - yet I've met addicts, users, dabblers and straight-heads of all shapes and sizes that conform to none of these generalisations.
"Alcohol abusers look fairly normal" - who defines what "normal" looks like?
So often, i think prohibition causes people's drastic changes in appearance due to drug use - as mentioned above with the long distance runner example - if you use up the energy you consume in your diet - or are malnourished due to addiction and the prioritisation of drugs over food due to poverty and marginalisation - then yeah - illegal drug users might have different facial features.

The same could be said about people during the world war/depression years; they'd probably look at urban western people's faces today with amazement. Even the average body shape and facial features of people on the 60s and 70s was noticeably different to today.
It's about time phrenology made a comeback. Fuck, who needs sniffer dogs when we can tell a head from a boozer just by copping a look at the cat's face? 8o

Where are the photos of the hot raver girls on E or the good looking corporate banker and super model doing blow?

These are the average people I do drugs with. I don't hang with hillbillies or petty thieves.

I saw some BS about celebrities who's looks have deteriorated from drug use. It was hte stupidest thing ever.

One was a picture of George Michael from the 80s when he looked like a chick, then the other was just a more recent one where he actually looks like a dude. I am pretty sure that picture is just him stopping wearing make up and getting his hair done by at a salon, then aging 20 years. not he result of drugs.

They also showed a 8 year old Maculhy Caulkin, then showed his heroin addict self today. Which granted he looks like shit, but they compare him to a picture from 30 yers ago when home alone came out.

Then there was the obligatory pics or Britney Spears and Lindsey Lohan. Plus, they showed Amanda Bynes before adn after pictures, and wrote something like 'we have no confirmation she used drugs, but how else would she end up looking like that'. Huh? I don't get how these media outlets get away with the borderline libel they perform so often.

These faces are not unattractive. 8)

Hmmmm...

From the Recovery.org link:

The addictive potential of methamphetamine has fueled a surge in meth possession, production, and sale, destroying lives and communities throughout the nation. In 2012 alone, 133,000 people tried meth for the first time, beginning at an average age of 19. These young adults could fill 188 high schools.
Altogether, about 440,000 people in the United States are current meth users, and the methamphetamine market is worth around $5 billion. In response to this epidemic, the crackdown on meth offenders has been harsh.
To save lives from being destroyed we must destroy them!

The health impact of substance abuse can leave visible marks on a person’s body, but that isn't the only consequence. The penalties for DUI and illicit drug use can be as painful and long-lasting as any change in appearance. A DUI charge is almost certain to result in conviction, with jail time of up to 6 months for the first offense, and a year or more for subsequent offenses – and even seizure of an offender’s vehicle. Those charged with felony possession of marijuana can face an average sentence of 31 months in prison, and over 3 years of probation. Meth possessors face some of the harshest sentences: over 6 months for possession of less than a gram, and 2 or more years for possession with intent to distribute.
You only use twice a month? Too bad, bitch! You're going to prison anyway! Who cares if you aren't addicted? You're a filthy drug user!
