What substance?

I have just tested a pill and it went straight to very dark red and then fairly quick to dark brown with a very dark purple (barely purple it was so dark). Predominately dark brown. Do you know exactly what substance it contains? - the guide only gives a choice of several.

I take it you were using Marquis reagent? If so, does the pill smell like safrole? Several substances can react this way including safrole and sassafras oil.

Yeh, marquis reagent. The smell is distinctive although I don't know what saffrole smells like.
Btw. the pills are pink smilies from the UK.
