Opioids What long term damage is done from codeine?

Some side effects that go away after you stop taking codeine are;

Hormone imbalances
Constipation

Urinary retention

Inability to fight infection due to lower immune system

Stomache problems

Bleeding problems; anemia and low WBC

Vision problems

There are more. The main on is the effect on the bone marrow that produces red and white blood cells. When you take it for a long time the hormones are affected and it reduces production of red and white blood cells along with your platlets.

These are temporary and go back to normal after you stop taking opiates.

There are no long term physical adverse reactions with codeine use.

Psychologically you can be addicted and while taking it you can be dependent to it.

But besides that no long term effects are noted.

In regular doses it's pretty safe except the common opiate side-effects. But if you start taking monsterous doses that might change, since high-dose codeine isn't really used except recreationally; might cause some other problems long term. I would avoid doses above 300 mgs.
