But you can't forget that the Pens donned the second coming of Christ in Sidney Crosby. That franchise was all but down and out. Until the Lebron James of hockey came around... except there was one big difference between the two enormous superstars... Crosby helped bring that city a title. The Penguins were a push of a button away from uprooting and moving to Kansas City, Las Vegas, or some other weird city for a Penguin to live in, but a last ditch effort gave Pittsburgh a second chance that they were able to take and run with. Granted they had the powerhouse team in the early 90s, but there were in trouble until Crosby and Malkin fell into their laps.

Now with a new stadium and two of the arguably BEST players in the league... this team has made a significant up turn. They're in good shape now, but 5 years ago... they were in as much trouble as any other struggling franchise.

well of course the atmosphere at PNC Park sucked, because the team sucks. I wasn't really counting atmosphere here. you can't factor in atmosphere when the team is a cellar dwellar. I was just saying how visually appealing the ballpark was.

Even so... the field was gorgeous, but the park as a whole didn't do as much for me as Philly or Cincy. Those two parks just had a GREAT feel to them.

You cant have oakland on this list complete bull shit. We have a great history both before and after the NFL merger. The team that should be there besides oakland is cleavland, huston teams that have no championships the raiders have 3 they actually have a history hall of fame players and coaches.

Teams that desevere to be on the list.

The Browns, Texans, Seahawks, The Bills

on other sports discussion boards about the worst franchise in pro sports, the Oakland Raiders were included on all the lists and in the comments sections the very intense and faithful Raider Nation came up the most defending their team.

you have valid points. the Raiders did make the AFC Championship, in their last good year (what was it 2001?), before they lost to the then-underdog of franchise the New England Patriots. ever since that game the Raiders have crumbled under the misguided management of Al Davis.

in my opinion, and in the opinion of sports journalists on this subject, the Oakland Raiders deserve to be on this list. it's not like their suck factor stands out too much in the NFL's list of bottom feeders, it's just the way that they lose and the horrible decisions made under the watch of Al Davis. as someone said above, most people have a feeling that when Al Davis dies and the franchise slips away from his cold, dead grip... the Oakland Raiders will be resuscitated into contenders again.

you say that their 3 SB titles and their history should make them exempt from this type of scrutiny, yet you say teams like the Cleveland Browns and the Buffalo Bills should replace them. the Browns and the Bills have just as much a coveted history, if not more than the Raiders (I know that the Browns won their numerous "Super Bowls" before the NFL merger so they don't quite count in the modern day).

if you do a search online on this topic, the Raiders have been included on all lists. I'm sorry, it's no fun as a fan to hear that everyone thinks your franchise is bad... but it's true.

at least the Raiders will get better post-Al Davis and at least you are not a Pittsburgh Pirates fan

You cant say the browns dont desreve to be on this list they have had numerous free agent singings and players that have had so many staff injuries yet nothing is done for them such as Charles Bentnely and Joe Juerivious the worst has to be the browns in the nfl or the Lions, NBA deffintely the clippers and the worst in base ball is obvious the pirates.

I suppose we should make the distiction between which franchise is worse historically vs. which franschise is currently under the most dismal management? That would clear up a lot of the disputes going on in this thread.

If it is current management, nobody is worse than Al Davis at the moment. Talk to Warren Sapp about just how bad things are over there.

Historically and currently the Clippers still get my vote as the all-around worst, but I don't follow baseball or hockey, and therefore cannot speak on the Pirates or Kings.

I would say in the NFL the worst are the Lions and the Raiders. Cleveland just upset a possible playoff contender in Cinci. when is the last time the Raiders have done that?

and taking this year in context, the Browns look pretty good. they have been in every game and could possibly be 4-0 (I know it sounds crazy, but they've been in every game thus far).

if the Raiders play the Browns this year I would say Cleveland would run all over them

Raiders have been playing pretty tough, the only blow out was week one vs the Titans.

I stay firm in beleiving that Oakland pulls it off vs San Diego this Sunday%)

Actually last year we beat both Cinci and the steelers. The browns would not beat oakland this year.

yeah but the Steelers were horrible at the end of last season. they beat most of the teams that were good (Packers, Vikings, etc) yet lost like 5 in a row to teams like the Browns, Raiders, Chiefs... was unbearable to watch

the clippers are a joke

oh bullshit the Pirates are much more futile of a franchise than the Cubs. at least the Cubs win... half their games every year.

I like how we are arguing about which of our team sucks more. it's like the anti-dick sizing. my dick is way smaller than yours and you don't want to see my tits

At least the cubs spend the money to TRY to put together a winning team.

Last years payroll for the pirates whole team was $9 million. Some teams have a single player making more than that.

I don't know about you guys, but I tend to look at overall history rather than recent history when thinking about the worst franchise in professional sports. I think the question should be broken down into who is the worst in recent times and who is the worst over a prolonged period. If you're looking short term, then shit, the Pirates are the absolute worst. But if you look a little further back, the Pirates are a decent enough franchise.

I know that things haven't been good for the Pittsburgh Pirates in recent years (18 and counting) but they wouldn't be on this list if they had just managed one or two winning records during that time. They've won five championships and they have 12 players in the Hall of Fame, tied for sixth. Their last two titles, in 1960 and 1979, are noted for being among the greatest World Series' of all-time, both going to seven games and featuring dramatic finishes. Now, I'm pretty sure nobody wants to be the fan of the team who sets the record for continued futility, but I'll bet anything that Cubs fans will take 18 straight years of suckage in exchange for one of the titles the Pirates have won in the past 102 years (funny enough, the Pirates won their first title in 1909, the year after the last Cubs championship). I also don't like the idea of the Raiders being on the list based on their history as well.

However, like I said, if you're looking short term, then the Pirates and the Raiders are the pits (what's wrong with the sea-faring criminals these days?) and not just for their shitty play on the field either. Both teams have been marred by some terrible front office moves. The Pirates don't want to spend money, while the Raiders waste truckloads of loot on bad players. The Raiders are looking okay so far this year, but the Pirates will probably go another couple years before they have a realistic shot of getting a winning record (Pedro Alvarez better be the man!)

For my worst picks, based on the long term, are the Arizona Cardinals, the Los Angeles Clippers, the Detroit Lions and the Phoenix Coyotes/Winnipeg Jets. These four franchises combined have managed just six league championships (two by the Cardinals and four by the Lions when it wasn't even the Super Bowl yet, just the NFL Championship). Despite being in the NFL since 1920, the Cardinals have only made the postseason just eight times!! They just made it to their first Super Bowl two years after years of failures and cutting corners by the Bidwells. The Lions have yet to make the Super Bowl. As for the Clippers and Coyotes/Jets, they've both failed to even win a conference title during their respective existences. In fact, they've combined to win just three division titles, all three by the Jets in the early 70s!

So yeah, I suppose your opinion on this will vary depending on how you look at it, but those are my picks based on long term futility. I was also thinking of incorporating other factors such as stadium quality and attendance, but this post was already too damn long.

great to see such a long, thought out post by you Average Whiteboy.

in any other sense besides sports sense, 20 years doesn't seem like a long time. however, in the world of sports 20 years is basically a couple life times. if you disagree with me on this point all you have to think about is high turn-around rate for NFL coaches and even NBA coaches. for some reason, MLB figureheads get away with so much more than these two sports. if you disagree with me on this point, one just needs to look at Bobby Cox's career. he was at ATL forever and all he really accomplished was on World Series trophy as long ago as 1995.

if Bobby Cox was an NFL coach, he would have sadly been fired long ago.

as a Pirates fan sure I remember the glory days of Roberto Clemente (RIP) and a pre-steroid stolen base machine in Barry Bonds. but they truly feel like a thousand years ago

I will always like the Pirates a little bit because of Dock Ellis' no-hitter on LSD. Greatest baseball story ever.
