:? What Is Drug Abuse?

> A Publication titled ; the Treatment of Drug Abuse ( Joint information service of the A.P.A. & N.A.M.H. )
Presents it's definitions of Drug Abuse as generally meaning ; the Non-Medical use of illegal drugs which alter the mental state in ways regarded by social norms & defined by statute as objectionable, ominous or at a minimum culture alien.

> There are major flaws with this definition of Drug Abuse as the Non-Medical use of drugs!

> This Political & Medical repression shows a lack of Respect for the Integrity of the Individual.
That the definition concludes with "or at a minimum culture alien" reveals that it is democratically in-appropriate & illegitimate!

> What about some other common definitions of Drug Abuse?
Is Drug Abuse...

1. Use of an illegal drug as opposed to a Legal one?

2. Use of any substance to the point of Intoxication?

3. Use of any substance to the point of intoxication that's obnoxious?

4. Use of a substance in a way or for a reason which society as a whole does not approve?

5. Use to the point of Addiction?

> Most of these definitions are socially, culturally or legally determined. They have neither
stemmed the tide of drug abuse, nor helped anyone deal with it's realities!
Neither has definitions which focus solely on the amount of a drug taken.

> At one extreme, states the A.M.A. guide, "execssive intake of any substance is termed drug abuse",
under this rule would fall the 10-cup-a-day-coffee-drinker, the two-pack-a-day cigarette smoker
& the 6-in-one-gulp aspirin taker.

> At the other extreme, Only Chronic Ingestion that leads to a state of physical & psychological dependence is termed "drug abuse"...
This definition rejects intermittent use, which accounts for perhaps, 75% of all Psychoactive drug taking.

> Most drug users, even of Narcotics, take a firm stand against "drug abuse" by employing informal social rules & sanctions.

> Here is a more Common Sense definition of Drug Abuse, which is being used by some of
the more enlightened researchers & specialists providing assistance to people with Drug Problems.
The advantage of this definition is that you can use it to identify & bring your own drug use
behavior under control.

> "Drug Abuse is a single episode or repeated pattern of substance use to the point where it is seriously interfering with your health,
or your economic or social functioning".

> the Consequences of your Drug use, in other words are what makes it "Abuse"!!!

or your economic or social functioning".
If it messes up your life its abuse.. yeah.. now what's the definition of messes up your life.. and is it the drugs messing up your life, or the legal system or the black market.. not a simple concept..

edit: and oh.. buy the way.. at this point I don't know anyone who abuses drugs more than the medical community.. can't log a problem as a solution in the brain, think if you did that with a computer.. it would crash.. addictive drugs don't solve problems but they can lead to thinking that does.. expansion, "tools", TEMPORARY escape, and recreation..

What entails drug "abuse" is completely subjective so really I don't think this question will lead to anything except arguing over semantics.

> I can speak from Personal experience on this subject, since I was "addicted" to narcotic pain pills for 9 years, starting with a painful kidney stone that was mis-diagnosed, and having no medical insurance for the first 1 1/2 years of this painful illness. the doctors just kept giving me more and more pills, and as many of you must know, after a couple years of non-stop use, it's not so easy to stop using them... not because your "getting high'" but simply to keep feeling "normal."

> While the pills were cheap and easy to come by they caused me no personal problems, I ran several sucessful businesses, paid my bills, paid my taxes, took care of an elderly grandmother, helped out my parents, spent some time doing charity work, etc. in other words,
I was a "responsible" member of society.

> After the DEA swept thru the area where I lived, shutting down all the "script" doctors, the legal ( & cheap ) source's for these pills dried up!
Most of my resources were spent simply trying to maintain a "normal" state of well-being, which became impossible after a time, so of course I lost everything... home, business, land, family, girlfriend, comic book collection, etc.

> Was I a "Drug Abuser?" Not to begin with, anyway. Not until it began to affect my life in a Negative way!!!

> I must admit this experience has given me a Personal bias Against the so called "War-on-Drugs."

( One of my best friends who suffered chronic pain, committed suicide when he could no longer obtain his "medicine." )

Heh, prison time and a criminal record for a non violent drug offense will do the same thing.

There is a BIG difference between drug addiction and drug abuse.. I agree, people need to see this and accept it.. everyone has to eat, but just because they do doesnt qualify them as having an eating disorder.. ever wonder why so many drugs are associated with flowers;)
