what is an xtal?

Sorry to come off as a bit of a 'noob' here - but what is the use of the word 'xtal'? I've been reading DMT threads and many people refer to DMT 'xtal's. I've searched for a definition but cant find one. Can anyone help?

xtal is sometimes used as shorthand for the word "crystal"

Yep, that answers it (xtal = crystal). Closing this as it's been answered and doesn't really stimulate further discussion.

This term comes from X being used as a substitution for 'ch' because it is the greek letter chi. See also: Xmas.
