What instrument(s) do you play?

About 20-25 years ago, when I was a teen, I was obsessed with Kurt Cobain and Nirvana and wanted to learn guitar. My dad bought me the guitar that Kurt designed, the Jag Stang Fender. I learned a bunch of Nirvana songs and simple riffs like Sweet Dreams and Smoke on The Water lol.
I still have the guitar and can still play the Smells Like Teen Spirit solo, but I never really went any further than that.

My husband on the other hand is a drummer. He plays DW drums. He also plays acoustic guitar and it makes me sick how he can literally play anything he hears.

I learned on guitar, but have since realized I am home on the bass. I consider myself a better songwriter than a player by any means. Still desperately trying to sing and play guitar at the same time, but I bumble and am slowly making progress. Picking up an electric guitar feels so foreign at this point that I simply don't even have one anymore.

I like the groove and enjoy showing up cocky guitarists w/ my melodic and booming playing. While they twiddle on their shrill 6 strings. But I can pick up pretty much anything and make it sound like something.

The weirdness of the second paragraph is due to lack of respect for the BASS. A good bassist can make all the difference in a group and take the material to the next level. Simply playing the same lines as the guitarist mostly leaves an unimaginative + boring tune.

Nirvana is where I started as well and I'm still playing that shit all the time. RIP Kurt, kept it simple, kept it weird, kept it angsty enough to channel my weird energies at least.

I will always love Nirvana. They are my roots. The first favorite band I ever had. :)

For me it was the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Sublime, and Nirvana, probably in that order although now I consider Alice in Chains to be the most refined and concentrated hit you can take from that era. And I no longer really care for Metallica but still dig them ocasionally(or however tf you spell that word I'm not looking it up, we need a built in spell check here and I'm starting a petition)

I suck at spelling so no worries lol.
I always loved Sublime, too. And as an adult, I've really gotten into Alice in Chains.
So, Kurt, Bradley, Layne, all dead.

Tis a shame, but it seems the best are too tormented to last too long in this world. The best art comes from that torment though, so I say it's better to burn out than to fade away. At least they have left an imprint on billions. No one gaf about that happy poppy stuff I need my artists to be crazier than me or I won't take them seriously.

I’m a guitarist. I learned some piano as a kid and took it up again as a teenager but never kept that up. I’ve been playing for 16 years about. Started with bass around 13. Then I picked up a sheet with basic chords and learned that. Then I learned grunge and kind of stayed there. That music never leaves me. Like other music too but I’m obsessed with grunge particularly Nirvana and it’s a fix to just play over that same old shit all the time. I write too.

I had a weird moment with my band about 2 weeks ago. I said to one of the guitarists(I play piano) "just get it right, your part isn't even as difficult as the bass", and the guitarists laugh "oohohoho the pianist saying bass is harder than guitar", but it IS harder than rhythm guitar, srsly. I could play rhythm guitar with my eyes closed while singing at the same time.(got a lot of respect for lead, but that's another thing)
A good bass player has to be so verily in the moment, and carries the band.
It's not like you play 3-6 chords and strum your hand a lil - it's an instrument that needs a lot of "feeling" and knowledge about harmonies and rhythms
Many guitarists just think they're better somehow, but when you make them pick up a bass they usually suck at it

Played a bit of trombone, tuba and sousaphone (tuba) back in the day.
Beat on drums like a two year old (but a decent two, ya know?).
Banjo somewhat....
Leeetle piano
Head is hurting trying to come up with the lie
need sake brb

Violin, flute and accordion. I want to try guitar but my hands are tiny and I have problems with some cords
I was given an electric guitar when I was 7 but I was never able to do much with it. It wore me out trying to press down with the right amount of pressure and chords were even harder. Oh well, nobody's perfect. At least I still play drums, piano and violin. I excel at classical violin, playing with orchestras and such. Drums being my first instrument it's like second nature (I got bored in marching band) and I can sight read just like on piano, but I'm not a great pianist. Maybe intermediate level

Piano/guitar but tbh I never was into guitar I know how to play it but it's not you know. Other than that, I used to produce moody techno you know, sit down and drink ur coffee but it didn't help much.
Hard for me to find any instrument remotely as fun and fulfilling as piano :D
I played a lot of instruments for a bit, learned the basics, etc,
but piano is just bliss

Just bumping this thread as I was about to create one with basically the same title in LAVA, then this one was recommended.

I see this hasn't been posted in since 2020 and we've had a lot of new members since so, I'm interested in hearing, as the title suggests: What instruments do you Bluelighters play?

What music do you make? What kind of tricks and accessories do you use (effects pedals, DAWS etc) to get a distinct sound? etcetera, etcetera.

I got really into synthesizers, drum machines, samplers and 'grooveboxes' (which are multi-track all-in-one composition machines) over the pandemic!

Spent a small fortune, but it kept me entertained through lockdowns, gave me a new hobby and revived in me, a love of composing music that I'd not experienced since first experimenting with modern DAWs (music programs for computers) almost ten years earlier.

I've really learnt a lot about sound design in this time (and just sound in general) which I'd describe as music the particle physics of music - sound in it's most elementary, atomic form.

I'll post some pictures of my favourite synths and give a bit of an explanation about what they can do soon.

Really hope some others chime in!

normally i play the guitar. also some piano. and i made it past beginner on bass and drums but that is a long time ago and i forgot how to play these again.
