Nor did I, and it absolutely is! Moody, groovy stankface-inducing grot wreaking havoc in communities previously content with their liquid dnb. I'm in two minds about this stuff---what will it lead to?
I think that sound is pushing its way into the mainstream, Etch released an EP with Bangerzonly.com, Justin Jay’s label, which is pretty mainstream as far as underground club music goes (I know it’s an oxymoron, but hopefully u get what I’m saying), and it was a very clean mix of leftfield bass and club music,
The liquid DnB kids are catching on
This is what I’ve been digging today, absolutely breakbeat pr0n
Hooverian Blur - Hypnotizer
Oh, it absolutely is, and 'mainstream underground' makes total sense. My comment was very much tongue-in-cheek.
Jesus, that Hooverian Blur EP is amazing---varied, high energy and sounds incredible. Thanks for the new artist!
A couple of tracks of similarly raw and percussive bass music:
Also a huge NC4K fan, Stones Taro is probs the best breaks artist for me, cause he fuses the West Coast breaks sound with the more UK Bass variety of breaks, both of which are absolutely delicious on their own but together it feels like it was made just for me.
Oh were absolutely in a golden age - i do hate that it can still be super snobby in the best scenes tho, like hierarchy of genres or expressions thereof still exists even within these cross pollinating music scenes within the dance music umbrella.Loving what I'm hearing of Stones Taro just skimming through his catalogue. As you might have picked up, my heritage is very much UK breaks and bass, and the West Coast sound hasn't been on my radar, but I'm hearing lots of house and dembow influences in the NC4K stuff so far and perhaps a less grimey and more electronic sound palette. Sounds really nice.
It's incredible how sounds have been hyper-democratised in recent years. There's always been tons of international cross-pollination, but it's really gone into overdrive now. I've been deep into electronic music since I was 9 years old raving to mid-90s trance on my paper round while everyone else liked nu-metal, but I honestly think we're in a bit of a golden age now, if one knows where to look and hears the right DJs of course. Anyone who says 'they don't make it like they used to' has just stopped making an effort, in my humble opinion. The median level might well be worse, but the peak is higher.
