What drug is most suitable for philosophical insight?

Amphetamines encourage focused thinking and narrow the perspective.

Which can also be productive for a shortwhile if focusing on proper things. Overall it seems to make people less aware because of the comedown, which keeps some from being able to focus at all.

Overall I find "traditional" psychadelics more useful.

Being sober always works for me. When you are clear headed and looking at reality from an uncluttered persective, you often see things better.

Actually that's a good point. But for some, such as myself, it is incredibly difficult for me to focus on any thought for a long period of time. I'm scattered brain all the time.

Though, i do find if drugs are used occassionally, i spend the majority of my time sober, maintain a healthy diet, have a decent sleep pattern, and get exercise, my mind is alot more clear. I think there is something to say for both being sober and drugs. Drugs can be a catalyst for thought, being sober can bring alot of clarity to that though. I just need something occassionaly to make my mind focus or be quiet and just percieve things..if that makes sense...

^ yeah I totally understand. It's called Adderall. =P
I'm just kidding, but I do see your point.

There's a song by the Monty Python boys that goes something like "Immanuel Kant was a real pissant...There's nothing that Nietzsche couldn't teach ya' about drinking...something something..."

Most philosophers from days of yore (and I would NEVER call Aleister Crowley a philosopher) do their thinking sober and then get trashed drunk when they're done.

As for psychedelics, it's mostly artists that use psychedelics (such as Picasso using Absinthe, which I consider "trippy") and not philosophers at all. Crowley and Hitler ate peyote, but they weren't philosophers...

They do not help insight."
is this your clinical assesment or something? amphetamines can give tons of insight, you just haven't experienced it.
peace

I think he is talking about the partial mechanism of the insight, I happen to agree with him, that is how i see at least at some of the stages of some amphetamine high.

Coffee.

Runner up: cigarettes.

Coffee is bang on. Love it. Just don't do a whole lot of it (espresso and some caffeine candies later.....)

Cigarettes is BS. Thats just my reaction. My mind fires off in stupid directions.
I spent some time discriminating Hondas at a dealership on nicotine. At night.
Complete bs.

in my experience, written insights on speed can definately take on a rambled spun out tone. maybe this is because one's increased neurological activity can comprehend more simultaneous stings of thought than usual.
i say this because, edited post drug, my insights remain.

Adderall (amphetamine) gave me some of my best years in school but some of the worst times emotionally. There was simply no limit to the amount I could accomplish in a day and I got the most rediculous grades, but was basically bipolar and/or schyzo the entire time. I think the simpon's episode where bart goes on "focus-In" is the best because it perfectly illustrates what happens to a person on regulard doses of amphetamine over long periods.

I agreee with the sober comment. I am most productive (in this sense) when I've been sober for weeks (if not months).

But at the same time, it is easy to loose the perspective of sobriety, if one does not get bent every once in a while (and vice versa). The massive contrast between twisted and sober can only be experienced if both are experienced one after another.
