what does your taste in music say about you?

^ Do you like to sing to yourself? I've known a lot of folk fans in my time, and one thing they all had in common was the habit of liking to burst into song, and actually have something complete, meaningful, and melodious come out. The beauty of folk is that it's made to be very singable by a wide range of people.

Only if I'm by myself or too intoxicated to care. I wouldn't want to put anyone through the pain of hearing my singing voice ;)

Wow. I couldn't disagree more.

One thing that has surprised and continues to do so is finding out the different varieties of music that people I know/met listen to.

I LOVE being surprised by someone's music taste. Seeing a middle aged white guy at a hip hop show is the kind of thing that would totally make my day. You never can tell someone's musical taste just by looking at them and that's the beauty of it. :)

Mine is all over the place, but I usually do concentrate more on certain genres over a length of time or period of my life. I still listen to most things I've been into from time to time for nostalgia if nothing else, but usually cause I still like it too. :)

For the past couple years it's been a lot of folk music, so I guess that maybe that means I'm laid back and settling down in my life or something?

my taste in music definitely changes the older i get. in high school, it was mostly rap music (age of acceptance). in college, mostly electronic (age of discovery). nowadays its classic rock (age of dont care anymore). LOL.

i agree spork, the older you get the more chill your music might become. even throughout my stint of electronic music. i started digging trance, happycore, jungle etc and then it bell curved down to deep house, techno, downtempo etc.

im not saying im strictly classic rock, its always super fun to pull out some old mp3s to listen to. or even turn to the old satellite stations to hear whats up. its not that now that i like classic rock, i hate hip hop. its just more a preference thing, and sometimes its good to take short breaks.

i completely digressed. so the question is what my taste in music says about me? i say it says that im seasoned.

These days I mostly go for drone music in its various forms, I guess that means I'm a boring person. %)

But more seriously, it could reflect my interaction style in large groups of people, where I usually prefer to observe things from the sidelines, kind of be a part of the background like Erik Satie's "furniture music" or Brian Eno's "discreet music." One-on-one I tend to open up far more, similarly to how a texturally-rich drone composition can if you sit down and listen real closely.

For the most part, my tastes in music lie about me....'cept for the IDM and post-rock, accurately denoting my pretension. ;)

Interesting. The opposite happened to me until I hit the two walls of straight up grindcore and japanese noise.

Unfortunately people who try and describe what their music taste says about them fall into the trap of not seeing with the eye of the beholder. Sure one may declare "My tastes are open-minded", but when challenged with certain sorts of music I am positive that many would show their true values in relation to music.

From my experience working at a music store, I have observed that people's tastes reflect 3 things:

1. How lazy they are
2. How much they view new forms with suspicion
3. How highly they view themselves

My taste in music says that even though I'm likely to be prejudged as a douchebag, I'm actually a very warm, sensitive, and caring person.

And further, anyone who prejudges me as a douchebag is an even bigger douchebag themself.

^ you must listen to disturbed, staind, nickelback, three days grace, etc.?

;)

i agree MOSTLY. i don't work at a music store per se, but i do work at a major retail store that carries cds and i can honestly say that people's taste in music generally does tend to show their true colors. but i don't think that that can be 100% confirmed until you actually talk about music to the person because maybe they've explored many other styles with an open mind and just prefer their "bad tastes." if they're just being stubborn and refuse to explore other types of music, then yeah, they're lazy.

BUT... also sometimes i forget that music isn't actually important to some people and not everyone's trying to get out of it what i am.

All I'm saying is those are the stereotypes that are associated with some of the major genres of music. Obviously you aren't going to be able to judge an individuals music taste based on appearance (unless they're wearing a pantera shirt or something).

that I'm open minded I guess.
I'll listen to anything that's catchy or has good lyrics.
I'm just waiting for the day in class when I'm wearing my Dead Kennedy's shirt & my ringtone of that horribly catchy song on the radio Tik Tok goes off.

I really don't like the Beatles. Well, more to the point, I don't like John Lennon's sound. (Paul's melodies and lyrics are actually pretty awesome). It really irritates me that you can find nary a British rock band nowadays that hasn't borrowed that dreary, mopey John Lennon songwriting sound to at least some degree.

:!:!:!:!:X:X:o:X:!:!

;)

When people ask me what I listen to I can't think of a broad genre that I prefer more than the others. I tend to gravitate towards synthy stuff, psychedelic stuff, poppy stuff, melancholic stuff (I really like songs like Gold Soundz by Pavement and Coffee & TV by Blur for example).

Last.fm says this (but only applies to what I've listened to from the start of 2009)

I'm into indie, electronic, rock, hip-hop and experimental, including:

The Beatles, Animal Collective, Boards of Canada, Radiohead, Pavement, Wilco, My Bloody Valentine, The Strokes, Underworld, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Deerhunter, Nas, Seekae, Pink Floyd, The Flaming Lips, Air France, Atlas Sound, Beck, M83, Grizzly Bear, Panda Bear, Hot Chip, Phoenix, David Bowie, Slowdive, Ladytron, Dappled Cities, Vivian Girls, Burial, The Dandy Warhols, Blur, New Order, Interpol, The Decemberists, The xx, Röyksopp, Talib Kweli, The Shins, Sonic Youth, Sparkadia, The Smiths, The Mars Volta, Fleet Foxes, Modest Mouse, The Horrors, The Hold Steady, The National, Children Collide, Beastie Boys, Franz Ferdinand

Which reminds me. MDAO have you ever listened to Air France? I think it's like the most uplifting, soulful music evar (matched maybe by Saint Etienne).

As for tastes in music , I think it says a lot about a person.

Electronic Music- You take recreational drugs
Country- You're from a rural area, likely a conservative, predominately female
Metal- You have anger issues/ use music to relieve tension
Rock- You're white
Jazz- You're wealthy
Hip-Hop/rap- You're young

Obviously there are exceptions to these rules but I'd say they're pretty accurate.

I disagree!
Electronic music - This is what I listen to most and don't do recreational drugs.
Country - Hate it. Live in a rural area.
Metal - Like it but not to relieve tension.
Rock - okay, I'm white.
Jazz - love it, but I am definitely not wealthy.
Hip-Hop/rap - Like it and I am definitely NOT young.

:-)

Jazz - You're wealthy? Are you serious?

I don't understand your stereotyping at all, in relation to the actual question at hand.

I like progressive metal and electronic music first and foremost, so I suppose I'm a recreational drug user with anger issues. Fortunately you're completely wrong.

My music collection is very eclectic, so my tastes in music would most likely show I'm pretty open-minded whilst also being pretty judgemental too;
that I take my frustrations out by headbanging to some heavy-ass metal;
or show my primal side when it comes to hitting the dancefloor while bass-heavy Dubstep/DnB is playing...

All in all though - I'm openminded, and quite possibly bi-polar. :p

i guess my music taste will tell as much about me as what someone wants to see

I like that...haha

While this may be true of a lot of people, I for one am truly open-minded when it comes to music. Show me anything and I'll most likely enjoy it :)

I used to say that too - but there really is music out there which I can't stand...from alot of the stuff in the charts which is just made to make money with no creative vision through it, to technical black/death/heavy metal which has too many time signature changes and awful screeching vocal. Plus Happy Hardcore & CountryNWestern drive me INSANE.

i don't think you can tell much about their personality aside from how much music means to them.

if you don't go looking for new music, it doesn't seem as likely that music is as big a part of your life as someone who tries to find new music every single day.
