Relative to quite a few other organics with very distinctive odors, GBL isn't really exceptional. I would not discount it having a strong odor based on its physical properties.
In practice, I've always found the stuff to be somewhat smelly, granted it's a smell you have to sort of search for to find. A few mL seemed to have a distinct odor when essentially sniffed and a freshly opened liter could be smelled on a bench from a few feet. The odor was certainly enough to keep me from ever wanting to ingest the stuff, but I couldn't imagine any big chem sources denaturing their solvents; even the one that is a pro-drug for a drug of abuse. I did find that the stuff did not store well over time. The containers really got chewed up and impurities were formed over time (HNMR confirmed in my case).
Based on the low odor, I think the OP may have 1,4-butanediol. It seemed to be a lot less smelly and caustic and is still apparently psychoactive. The whole GBL, GHB, BDO triad seems to be really unfortunate IMO. GBL smells to nauseating and seems too toxic to be consumed, GHB salts either taste like salty shit or a mouth full of copper, and BDO doesn't seem to be worth the risk as it isn't as good as GHB but still has worrying solvent properties.
Getting back on topic, I don't know what to say regarding the claim that GBL does not posses a fairly strong odor. I was in contact with at least 6 separate containers of the GBL of various ages and they all stank. This was the case for delta-valerolactone and methylene-GBL as well. The only lactone of this size I remember not stinking was alpha-methyl-GBL. I think genuine GBL likely doesn't smell good universally.
