What does addiction/use say about the area you live in or you?

I was talking about this with my therapist the other day. I didn't see a thread like this done before, if it was I apologize.

I was thinking what does the popularity of a particular drug in a certain area of the country say about that area and the people living there who use? Especially when they are equally available and price doesn't seem to be an issue at all (we all know if you want a drug bad enough you will find money :)).

For example I live in Massachusetts and it seems opiates are the DOC over here, yeah you can get other drugs (of course) but they really aren't as popular and statistically we have more opiate addicts over here.

For example in terms of availability I can get coke just as easy as oxy, dilaudid, heroin... as easy as amphetamines, benzos, weed, ecstasy, etc... as can most of you of course. But they just aren't as popular, and the places/meetings I've been to opiate addicts seem to dominate.

Is it the weather, is it being near water, higher cost of living, etc...

And what do you think the addiction/use says about the people in your area?

Why choose coke over heroin, heroin over coke... etc. What does that say about those particular people? What do you think the people in your area have in common that makes the DOC of your area the DOC?

Yeah I know you can find anything if you really try :) and that's what I was saying. There are so many options, but what makes certain areas of the country gravitate to a certain group of drugs or drug?

Like over in Utah, and around there all you hear about is meth, over here in the east coast all you hear about is heroin and opiates. I'm just using those as basic examples. Of course there are other things that are also easily obtainable and in some cases cheaper but why do we seem to go to those things? What does that say about the area we live in?

yea i live in southern new hampshire too and opiates really are most peoples DOC i rarely every see people doing coke/meth etc.

I do whatever drugs are prescribed to me (currently percocet and xanax), and not much else at this time.

I tend to have a good repore with my doctors, which leads to goodies.

Here in New Zealand, weed and methamphetamine are by far the most popular and easily available drugs (besides alcohol and tobacco, of course). Other drugs like ecstasy, psychedelics, coke and heroin are also available, but you usually have to know the right people to find them. Methamphetamine here is ridiculously expensive, yet it's still used by almost every section of society. The very poor to the very rich. I honestly have no idea why meth is so popular here... I guess it's just a relatively new drug (it's only been available for 10 years or so) so it's still considered something of a novelty.
