Cognition enhancement... What does that mean? My idea of cognition enhancement is an opiate. They relax you, disinhibit you, and give you a sort of energy. Are nootropics like opiates? Do they produce noticeable high? I would also describe some of my experiencesw with LSD as cognition enhancement. In fact, that's a better match than opiates. But I doubt a legal substance would have anywhere near as remarkable of an effect. So are nootropics just placebo?

Actually hydergine is a nootropic derived from the same source as LSD.

They improve memory, word recall, speed of thinking, and other cognitive tasks. Its hit or miss.

In a simplified nutshell they replensih and restore commincations between the 2 halves of the brain. I'm Too lazy to go into more detail atm. Plenty more info 'out there'

But this explains where they are reported to be good for memory problems. Ive tried piracetam several times. It did have an effect on memory, but the main effect was on energy. 1 pill is fine, 3 got me climbing the walls with hyper energy, after writing about 60 coherent posts on BL, cleaning my house from top to bottom, doing All my laundry and washing up I was still hyper as fuck. I dont normally do 20% of all that in one day.

(Have you seen that film 'unlimited' lol) No Im not a shill. I wouldnt spend 23 months making 1483 posts to become a shill.

Capacity to take in new info also increased.

ALL THIS ISNT PLACEBO IMO.

I keep comparing it to real proper coffee when you have no tolerance, thats the best compariosn i can come up with. Only there is none of the "hurry up" "quicker quicker" stress that you can get with caffeine.

Piracetam is definitely not a placebo at least one way. It is a prescription drug in some countries, usually for myoclonus, says the Wiki.

It's "memory enhancing" effects, who knows. What's funny is that *how* piracetam and similar compounds work is really poorly understood. It seems to help ion channel communication or increase membrane fluidity or who knows what. But I've never seen a really clear answer.

Like mydrugbuddy, for me the general effects are energy in a way that is quite different from say coffee. Piracetam's other curious effect is how they dramatically potentiate certain other recreational chemicals (MDxx variants in particular). I have not seen any memory effects or other "oh my I'm a genius now" type things from piracetam, but energy boosts are nice and welcome.

It may be that the "memory effects" will be more noticeable if your brain is having issues. So perhaps those older or with some mental conditions might see more effects, kind of like how older men might notice testosterone booster effects more than younger people still producing plenty of T. Nootropics can be nice but YMMV and take all claims with a grain of salt.

First time i took a pill it drudged up loads of memories that hadnt crossed my mind for decades. It was good to be able to see them with a greater or at least a maturer perspective.

Some good, some bad. That experience seems to have been a one off though.

I dont mean memory enhancement in the way these people remember 52 playing cards in order etc. It's nothing like that.

Nootropics aren't like opiates you aren't going to have a noticeable "feeling" when taking them, more like a build up of effects as time goes on through continued usage. I've been taking nootropics for some time now, and my stack has changed over that time but the goal of it overall is to create a stack that not only helps me with memorization and memory recall but also to help me with my social anxiety in regards to handling social interactions.

Aniracetam, and L-Theanine so far have been the best things that I have added to my nootropic stack in regards to helping ease my social anxiety. L-Theanine stimulates many receptors (glutamatergic, gabanergic) which play roles on memory and recall processing as well as helping ease anxiety. Aniracetam really seemed to have helped my verbal fluidity, which was one of the biggest issues that causes anxiety for me (stumbling for what I am saying, trying to remember names and such) but also stimulates the AMPA receptors which play a fairly large role in memorization and long term memory recall.

Thanks, glad I could be of help. There's tons of information out there about Nootropics, SDFT (Smart Drugs for Thought) website is pretty informative and on their Research page there is a downloadable PDF regarding the Racetams.

This is a description of what nootropics are. Nootropics are substances that boost cognition. They increase the amount of neurotransmitters and brain chemicals in the brain. They improve mental functions such as cognition, memory, intelligence, motivation, attention, mood, and concentration. Some nootropics reduce anxiety. Some nootropics boost memory and problem solving skills. Still, other nootropics can act as a stimulant. There are different classes of cognitive enhancers

Hypranootropics: These are powerful relatively non-toxic substances that causes a powerful and sometimes exponential cognitive boosting effect. Permanent. :D

Nootropics: These are relatively non-toxic substances that causes a moderate to powerful cognitive boosting effect. Some of them have mild effects. Permanent. :)

Quasinootropics: These are relatively non-toxic substances that causes a moderate to powerful cognitive boosting effect,. Usually temporary, but generally causes little to no cognitive damage. They're half-nootropics or semi-nootropics. Some or them have mild effects. :\

Pseudonootropics: These are fake nootropics. They act as mere cognitive enhancers that give a temporary boost to cognition, while being toxic to supertoxic. They cause more damage than good and the damaging effects. They are fool's nootropics. Don't be fooled by them. Some of them also cause severe dependancy and plenty of side effects. 8( :(

Note: Even though some nootropics cause hallucinations at high to very high doses, the deaths still doesn't exceed 200 people a year. 2C-x series is a great example.

2C-x series at low doses may have an exponential effect over time. It's one of the only chemical classes at sub-perceptual doses to work better when you're smart. Even the occasional strange thought that initially doesn't makes sense at first becomes part of the answer to some other questions. abstract thinking. %)

DMAA has stimulant properties without the cognitive damage.

Nootropics are a complex web. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00gFvg2iUcY&feature=player_embedded

Nootropics are better when they are supplementary to a healthy lifestyle and good healthy food.

The awesome thing is that some psychedelics have displayed nootropic effects at sub-psychedelic doses. The 2C-x series being an example. They also inspired analogues with more tailered effects. Such as IAP(IndanylAminoPropane) being a less potent, but longer lasting version of MDA. IAP might have great anti-depressant and therapeutic potential without interfering with daily cognitive tasks. It's like some of them work in the background.

There's more information on wikipedia, smarter nootropics, the big and dandy nootropics thread (stack 2), and many other places. Just remember, you want to end up like the Eddie Morra from limitless at the end of the movie, not the beginning. In the movie, he encounters NZT-48 (a pseudonootropic that temporarily raises IQ to a 4 digit level and boosts confidence). The NZT-48 appears to cause a high dependancy, side effects(especially while off it) and is highly addictive with withdrawal symptoms and blackouts. NZT-48 just seems meth-like. In the end, he gets labs to reengineer it to take out the side effects and toxicity and no physical dependance, side effects, or withdrawal symptoms. Thus, NZT-49(a real nootropic) was born. NZT-49's effects are permanent and exponential increase in cognition. It seems like it would be like phenylpiracetam for concentration combined with a low dose of 2C-x compounds(likely 2C-D for memory enhancement and increased problem solving. A low dose of 2C-I could be stimulating.) and with DMAA(Dimethylamylamine) added for clean alertness and energy and maybe 2-methyl-2-butanol for increased confidence and sociability. NZT-48 is NZT-48(Dangerous! What did you ate?). NZT-49 is NZT-49(very benign:)safe.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQi_d9c2oEs When he finally invents NZT-49. :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obeh_raHAUk When he didn't think to Create NZT-49, but is left with the toxic effects of NZT-48 already kicking in after only a year or so. 8(
