What book(s) are you reading now?

The Process - Brion Gysin
An epic, mosaic trek into the Sahara that ties itself into what is happening before during and after the NOW. This novel is keeping my attention extremely well. It seems like it's a story being told to you, just rolling off the tongue. Wasn't sure what to expect in the first 50 or so pages but, JESUS did it crank up.

The Place of Dead Roads - Burroughs
My first rereading of this book. The most lucid of the 'Cities of the Red Night' trilogy; and in my opinion, the most fleshed-in and tied together book by Burroughs. Besides, of course, Junkie; which is as The Man would say himself a 'bland, factual statement'. I always keep it around to relate and find landmarks from the pictures he paints in the others.

currently reading Illuminatus! Trilogy, and can't possibly recommend it more!

Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll(pretty much all three in the first couple pages), with some ridiculously elaborate esoteric mysticism and mind-bending conspiracy theories to boot.

Sounds good, thanks for the recommendation.

The last book I was reading was The Celestine Prophecy, and while I agree with the spiritual message of the book, I found the writing itself to be almost unbearably bad. Has anyone else read this? It was so highly recommended by so many people and I was looking forward to it so much but my god it sucked.

^ I've read the Celestine Prophecy and the other books in the series. I really don't have a problem with the writing style of the author and I actually quite enjoyed the books. Its not perfectly written but the message is there and put forth in a pretty interesting way. It worked for me :)

I forgot to mention Cities of the Rednight. only one from that trilogy I havent read is tPoDR. i guess the other one is Western Lands

I have the phat WORD VIRUS book (i call it the "big book of burroughs")...it's got favorited excerpts from all his writings (including letters to Kerouac and shit like that). I'll always consider him to be underrated and often misunderstood (sometimes by me too but that makes it all more interesting).

Vonnegut owns all, though

Here are the books I've read in the past month or so:

Crank, Glass, and Identical by Ellen Hopkins. Awesome books written in verse. Crank and Glass are about the author's daughter who became a meth addict. Identical is about two twins that are basically jealus of each other.

Smack by Melvin Burgess. About a bunch of teenage kids who get addicted to heroin. I liked this book because its not biased on either side.

Tweak by Nic Sheff. Great memoir about being a meth/drug addict.

Heroin Diaries by Nikki Sixx. A year in the life of a heroin addicted rock star.

Yes, good message indeed. Maybe it's just not for me. I don't know, a lot of people I've asked agreed with me but others seemed to love it.

It felt like very very little characterization, thats one of the main things that bothered me. It was a very fast paced story with tons of characters being introduced all the time and I couldn't get a "feel" for any of them, including the main character. He had a little more characterization than the rest, but barely. I didn't feel like I knew him nor did I particularly care what happened to him. It was a good example of a book that's VERY plot based vs character based, and I find I don't tend to get into that kind of book very well.

The Kama Sutra...
lol - isn't that a picture book? ;)

I finished The Bridge (Iain Banks) and found it pretty entertaining - it contains some excellent, powerful imagery. I would get to the end of some chapters and have to take a deep breath...

I've now started on The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. Even just a few chapters in, i can tell i'm gonna enjoy this book - well the writing style anyway. It's also giving me some insight into a very different culture.

(Gee it's interesting, but not necessarily surprising, how popular drug-related books are amongst us).

Indeed. I'm finishing up Bluebeard right now.

May go for a third if I'm feeling frisky. Don't want to exhaust the Kurt supply too soon though, I've got a lot of life left (hopefully...:D).

^ No the Kama Sutra isn't a picture book at all. Its more of a manual of sorts, except also has an ancient indian tale that puts each position into context of the whole of the ancient esoteric sexual/spiritual acts.
The edition I am ready is much more than a book full of naked bodies joined together. Its about the spiritual bond between lovers. Its one of the more serious publications as far as I know.

It's been on my to read list for a while and I'm glad I'm finally reading it. :)

^^just one more lonely man in a crazy world. suicide is inconsequential i suppose

well i'm getting into Lunar Park - my first Bret Easton Ellis seeing many here rave about him.

Lying in bed lat at night and the wife says to me: "You've got goosebumps". It must be good. ;)

I can't say I have much desire to pickup American Psycho. It doesn't sound like my kind of book. I cant believe they sell it here sealed in plastic. WTF do they think is gonna happen? Ive never come across this before.
