What are your favorite eras of hip hop?

I just listened to Reasonable Doubt the other day, and it most certainly is not a classic. Dead Presidents II, D'Evils (by far the best song he's ever done aside from putting Eminem on Renegade and getting raped), 22 Two's, Friend or Foe, and Coming of Age are really good. The rest is take-it-or-leave it, including the absurdly underwhelming Brooklyn's Finest. Then again, people are liberal with how they throw out the word classic...

Honestly, Jay-Z is the most overrated artist of our generation.

I don't really get into the "eras" of hip-hop. There's something for everyone: Public Enemy, BDP, Eric B. and Rakim early days; Tupac, GangStarr, Mobb Deep, N.W.A., Wu-Tang mid-90s... And around the turn of the millenium had a lot of fire from the likes of Blackalicious, Louis Logic, Eminem, Greenhouse Effect, Mos Def, Jurassic 5, Little Brother, etc.

I'm really a great fan of the West Coast circa Casual - Fear Itself and Aceyalone - All Balls Don't Bounce / A Book of Human Language. Those albums are like big eff-yous to the East Coast at the time.

For me i would say that the best era was early 90's east coast stuff. Tribe, Organized Konfusion, De La, Public Enemy. I think that era had a been well influenced by the beginnings of hip hop, sampling became a little more involved and the mc's were hungry to show not only lyrical ability but also a good flow.

Beyond that era i think a lot of good stuff came out up until about 2003, lot's of great stream on concious hip hop e.g Sage Francis, Solesides/Quannum, Heiro, Anti Pop Consortium etc.

I can't think of anything worth getting excited about lately, i am sure there is good stuff out there but i don't dig for it anywhere near as much.

Above all i thank hip hop for introducing me to other genres of music, as a result of hip hop i now love Jazz.
