What are you listening to? Part XXX - Sexxxy tunes for sexxxy folks

Do I have a Queen story? If I do I’ve forgotten it so feel free to tell on my behalf 😃

I fukkin loathe Queen though :!

EDIT: just realised you may mean the whole weird Queen-obsessed school gang who made kids get down on their knees and proclaim undying love and adoration for Queen.

Weird doesn’t begin to explain it 8o
We didn't have such a group in our school, although everyone's musical tastes soon seemed to become common knowledge, among the kids that were into music, at least for the whole of your own year, and at least one year below and above also.

At one point, I heard that "X is looking for you!" This person being at least one, maybe 2, school years above me, and that sort of comment often seemed to mean that they were out to get you in some way, for you having pissed them off, or them just not liking you etc.

Anyway, it wasn't too long before X found me. And he started off by saying something like "I hear you call yourself a Queen fan!?"

My apprehension must have been apparent, because he then said something along the lines of "Relax Mush (pronounced Moosh as in Whoosh), I'm not going to hit you!"

He then said that he was going to ask me some questions to determine whether I was eligible to be called a Queen fan.

I cant remember all of the questions, but they started off with easy ones, like where was Freddie born, and what was his real name. The did get a bit more challenging, but I answered all of them with ease, and I could see him racking his brains trying to think of more difficult questions, after about 5 questions asked and answered.

When he couldn't think of any more questions, he eventually declared that I was indeed a "True Fan", and shook my hand, IIRC. :ROFLMAO:

Maybe this had something to do with turning me into a bit of a music trivia geek, I guess it's one of my 'special interests.' For any bands I particularly like, I always at least like to know where they are from, their previous history, what bands they were in previously etc, what are their other albums, and when were they released, who their influences are (often checking this to see if the article agrees with my own thoughts on that) etc etc. I just have a general appetite for information about this sort thing.

I love music documentaries. Some of the best ones I've seen have been from the BBC4 "classic albums" series, and the episode about the recording of Rumours, and everything else going on at the same time was especially interesting. Also the one about Paul Simon's Gracelands was fantastic. Without all the African stuff going on, the bare bones of the songs played on just an acoustic guitar, with only Paul Simon singing them, sound just like any other Paul Simon songs, but the documentary explained the background to and reasons for Gracelands. He'd either been traveling in Africa, or listening to lots of African music, I can't remember, perhaps it was both, but Simon's immediately preceding albums had tanked, and the record company had massive doubts about funding or releasing Gracelands in the way Simon was envisioning it.. The record company thought that no one would like it, and that it would be a huge flop, and It almost never happened. How wrong could they have been! IIRC, I think they basically just said something along the lines of 'if you must do this then go ahead, but we have no interest in this project or any hope for it. It's only because of your previous success that we might consider releasing it, if you ever complete it.'

They even made a whole hour long episode about Carly Simon's song "You're so Vain" and there was plenty of material to fill 60 minutes.

I also love movies about famous musicians, a couple of the best imho have been Walk the Line about Johnny Cash, starring Joaquin Phoenix, and "Ray" about Ray Charles starring Jamie Foxx, they were both brilliant films.

There's been several documentaries about Lemmy, and every one I've seen has been great. The guy was incredibly level headed and down to earth, considering his fame, lifestyle, and drug and alcohol consumption, and an absolute gentleman.

The Oasis one, that was on Netflix was also good. The anecdote about Noel having written "Live Forever" in the studio, while all the other members got bored and fucked off to the pub, leaving Noel on his own in the studio, working for hours on perfecting that song. When they got back from the pub he played them the song, and they were in total dis-belief, like "You didn't write that!!?!" To date it's still one of my favourite Oasis songs, and it was interesting to get more background about that pretty early days track.

Heh, I started a new school when I was 9 and on the first day, this kid (who was a bit of a bully) targeted me as the 'new boy' and said "do you love Suzi Quatro?", so I said "no who's she?" So we ended up having a scrap.

Became best friends after that...

Bet you knew who Suzi was a couple of years later.
