Social What are you currently reading?

I'm currently reading Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon. It took a while to get going but at this point I think this is going to be one of my all-time favourite novels. The blend of masterful prose, science, and slapstick is like nothing I've come across. I also, of course, appreciate the author's evident dopefiendery.

Some dealers are all chemical enthusiasm, others, all business.

Last night I dreamed I was plugged right in
To a bubblin' hookah so high,
When all of a sudden some Arab jinni
Jump up just a-winkin' his eye.
"I'm here to obey all your wishes," he told me,
As for words I was trying to grope.
"Good buddy," I cried, "you could surely oblige me
By turnin' me on to some dope!"
With a big fat smile he took ahold of my hand,
And we flew down the sky in a flash,
And the first thing I saw in the land where he took me
Was a whole solid mountain of hash!
All the trees was a-bloomin' with pink 'n' purple pills,
Whur the Romilar River flowed by,
To the magic mushrooms as wild as a rainbow,
So pretty that I wanted to cry.
All the girls come to greet us, so sweet in slow motion,
Morning glories woven into their hair,
Bringin' great big handfuls of snowy cocaine,
All their dope they were eager to share.
Well we dallied for days, just a-ballin' and smokin',
In the flowering Panama Red,
Just piggin' on peyote and nutmeg tea,
And those brownies so kind to your head.
Now I could've passed that good time forever,
And I really was fixing to stay,
But you know that jinni turned out t'be a narco man,
And he busted me right whur I lay.
And he took me back, to this cold, cold world,
'N' now m' prison's whurever I be...
And I dream of the days back in Doperland
And I wonder, will I ever go free?

i’ve started She Came to Stay. the parallels between it and The Sea, The Sea are more prominent between either book and Lolita. the web formed by those three along with Possession and The Invention of Morel has me giddy — The Price of Salt should be mentioned despite being an imperfect puzzle piece.

unfortunately the library only has She Came to Stay in hard copy. making note taking too much. will have to enjoy observations as fleeting.

The Pale King by David Foster Wallace is on deck after I finish a reread of Infinite Jest...
Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese .. was looking to reread The Tennis Partner, but it was not available.

Jest I love so much.. so dark at points that you may have had to ferry such a spiritual oblivion to believe there was a path, but so much is brilliant light. When he gets into the Boston AA segment, he gives the best fellowship literary run down I have ever read.. nothing is even close. I love the tennis academy portions, brilliant lovable human freaks.. I tend to love good natured high functioning freaks above all others.

Some people say Jest is a struggle to get through, I have no clue what they are faking talking about.. Christ its like because of its longevity you're masochistically trenching through the god damn bible. The description of the relapsing addict is so good.. and the crack addicts last stand.. mesmordzingly accurate with his high art.

Best drug book ever and very high on my humble list.

I've been thinking about this one and I think you've convinced me.

Great for distracting me and getting me edumacated at the same time.
Could be a lot worse but not much. Lol

"Tchitcherine: “You mean thiophosphate, don’t you?” Thinks indicating the presence of sulfur… Wimpe: “I mean theophosphate, Vaslav,” indicating the Presence of God."

Wetware by Rudy Rucker, online through Creative Commons... published in 1988 it takes place in 2030 in a drab urban setting on the moon. Utterly hilarious.
I posted the first chapter

What does that mean?
Sorry, I was reacting to the "wetware" thing.
Very silly.
Carry on.

Just finished it. It got even better as it went along. Some of the writing was truly beautiful, and I've never laughed so hard while reading a novel, not even to A Confederacy of Dunces. It is also utterly obscene. The sex obsession and scatological humour were a bit much for my tastes. If you are looking for a coherent plot without loose ends this is not the book for you! It's more a collection of scenes with a loose connecting narrative. Overall, one of my favourite novels and definitely the best dope-fiendy one I've read.

Next up: Infinite Jest.
