what are the best prescription sleeping pills?

bleedingheartcommie said:
I'll do some reading about that one^^^^^^ thank you

wow... if you are on pharm grade GHB and cant get good restful sleep, im gonna go out on a limb and say your screwed... there really is no pill in the world that will help you sleep (without addiction/tolerance) that would be better than GHB. i truely feel for you... if you don't mind my asking, what kind of uppers are you on and how much do you take?? also, how old are you?? it seems as though you may need to start taking a higher dose of GHB, and keep upping it as you need it, which i know sucks but you really have to choose what you would rather have... sleep or non-addiction.

there is one seperate alternative that i found to help me. buy a bunch of candles, nag champa, and perhaps a bowl of salvia 20x. believe it or not, i suffered from brutal insomnia that was brought upon by some very repressed memories (childhood abuse [beat not molested]) my trip took the form of a goddess, who to this day i call the salvia goddess. she guided me through all the evil memories and brought me to a dark circle and told me to go in. i did, and i cannot truely explain what happend in that hole but i know that i solved some major personal issues. i find that shamanism and spirituality (not religion) have been the best ways for me to bypass nightly insomnia, o ya and also this ambient radio website. http://www.ambientmusic.co.uk/ambient_radio_stations.html

good luck to you friend, and remember what works for some deffinatly might not work for others, but if the mind is willing then its worth a shot.

Ive always wondered how hard or if it is even possible in the United States to get a prescription for barbiturates? Can it be done, I would like some?

lol, you would like some?? wouldnt we all just love a script for some ludes... of course im only 19 so i missed out on some of the more *fun* drugs... only barb ive tried is butalbital, which i think is much better than benzos but not as good as opiates.

There are many options:

MEDS MADE TO MAKE YOU SLEEP:
-benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium...)
-non-benzodiazepines new hypnotics (Ambien, zopiclone, Sonata)
-barbituates (Nembutal, Seconal...)
-carbamates (Soma, Miltown...)

MEDS THAT HAVE ANOTHER PURPOSE, BUT CAN MAKE YOU SLEEP:
-antihistamines (promethazine, diphenhydramine, doxylamine...)
-sedative antidepressants (Remeron, amitriptylline, trazodone...)
-neuroleptics/antipsychotics (Seroquel, Thorazine...)
-others (Clonidine,...)

did I forget something?

It's all about what kind of sleep you are after. I think everyone knows alot of the safe common sleep aids are most effective when you have been up for at least a couple of hours, have some food n water in your body, and have not recently taken a massive amount of stimulants...........

With that said, there are still drugs that will knock you out no matter what.

The anti-psychotics that i've tried is seroquel and zyprexa. Both are awful for sleep IME. Even low doses have me feelin like shit for two-three days. I do sleep when I take em, but I could probably function better with no sleep and caffeine rather than taking zyprexa or seroquel and trying to get sleep to function better the next day. I find zyprexa worse than seroquel. High doses of these, espically zyprexa will knock me out NO MATTER WHAT. But they are really awful I think.

Ummm, Im suprised alot of people find trazadone really affective. No matter what dose I take, it stuffs up my nose too much to the point where I cant sleep. Plus I always faint when I stand up on trazadone. It does make me "sleepy" but I cant sleep.

weed used to help me in HS, but not anymore, those were the days. If you don't smoke much pot, smoke alot and you will prob be really tired and wake up feelin great. Tho, I know some kids who feel like shit and claim they get "weed" hangovers after they wake up. wtf?

Ambien is great for a few days, then I found my tolerence grew too quickly. I used to love ambien cause I would always get 6-8 hours of sleep and wake up bright eyed and bushy tailed. But now when I take ambien, it feels so forced, I just feel so weird in the morning. Plus I find it impossible to redose. Once you wake up from ambien, you gotta wait HOURS before it will make me sleepy again.

Lunesta does not do ANYTHING for me. Benadryl is more affective. The shit really fucks up my gf tho. slurrs her speech like shes drunk.

benzo's usually do the trick for me. Some work and some don't. Valium does not do anything for me. But klonopin and xanax knock me out, usually 2+ mg. I remember one time in HS, I had a house party, drank and smoked a bit, but then topped it off with 1-2mg of klonopin. I fell asleep on my coutch in my clothes with my hands in my pockets. I woke up in the same position that I fell asleep in. That was the best night of sleep EVER! Maybe cuz I had such a great party and met my HS gf that night. So maybe great sleep has alot to do with your mindset.....that's kinda obvious right?

My favorite method for sleep and my drug of choice in general is opiates. Heroin is fantastic, but would leave me with a sore throat alot. My fav method was poppy pod tea. What I would do was make the tea at night, drink alot, stay up all night enjoying the great pod high, then in the morning, I would drink another massive cup and would sleep like I was dead. I would wake up feeling so refreshed and happy.

That's what i'm really after, waking up feeling refreshed. From studying sleeping and dreaming, your body goes through different cycles when you sleep. I think a cycle is every three hours or so. You start in a very light sleep, around 1.5 hours, you are in your heaviest stage of sleep, REM sleep where you are dreaming. Your brain is actually making alot of repairs to your brain during dreaming. And then the cycle starts to fade and you start over again after 3 hours. If you are woken up during that 1.5 hour mark or during heavy REM sleep, you will most likely feel really groutchy, ,irratable, ,and generally shitty. So I believe you can function sometimes better with 6 hours of sleep raither than 8-9 if you wake up the right way.........someone correct me if im wrong at all. I studied this in college psychology 2 years ago.

Ummm, what else, benadryl is the only thing that has constantly worked over the years thats over the counter. Not everytime, but 50mg works about 2/3rds of the time. And I feel decent in the morning. sometimes shitty, sometimes great.

Benzo's and poppy pods or heroin is really the most refreshing sleep method for me.

Of course, natural sleep is great too, usually due to exercising and overexausting myself. But im really after the feeling of waking up feeling great.

yeh, took too much speed today.

.....i dont like benzo's for sleep
10mg of Ambien will get almost anyone a full nights sleep

Ambien doesn't work for all people ... it actually keeps me awake.
Benzo's are really a bad move for insomnia although temazepam is scripted for severe cases (UK).
Imovane/Zimovane (Zopiclone) on the other hand ... half a 7.75mg tab works wonders :)

Seroquel hands down, even though I started with 25mg and now I have to take 200mg for sleep induction, that was on a 2year period (and I was doing loads of coke and crack in the end and it still worked), also seroquel doesn´t have the horrible w/d´s benzos have.
With benzos the tolerance skyrocketed to ridiculous levels, especially if you use them during the day too it´ll become very hard to go to sleep with only benzos, ambien works for a while but then it loses it´s effects

zopiclone used to knock me right out...except for the brief period when i was also shooting ketamine at the same time (can' sleep on k...no way, no how)

^ Seconal is still produced by Ranbaxy. However, given the fact that it's never scripted anymore, it's safe to say that, no, Seconal is not available anymore. I've read that it's prescribed in some jurisdictions as a means of doctor-assisted suicide.

As for the best prescription sleeping pills, personally I'm a huge fan of Midazolam, Triazolam and Nitrazepam.

hmpf.. this thread has had me puzzled...when I was in rehab, they wouldn't give me any recreation sleeping aid for my insomnia, but instead I was given trazadone.. the doses where tirated from 50mg to 300mg in 50mg increments.. and the most I got from it was a fucked up (as in confused as hell) state and flashing vision where my vision would fade to black once to twice a second.. making everything seem pixelated.. however it actually gave me energy..

I found ambien worked for the few months I was rxed it..

alprazolam is not good to take for sleep because it screws with your REM cycles.. but it does put me to sleep in high dosages..

Zopiclone works alright for me.. nothing special though..

all time winners for me go to A)Nitrazepam (Brand name Mogadon in America) B) Midazolam (Dormicum or Versed) and C) zolpediem (Ambien in USA) all work wonders for my chronic insomnia personally.. although two of the three are benzos so you probably will have a hard time getting your doc to write those for you... :(

I've also heard that Halcion will put you OUT.

I second that. For me Halcion (triazolam) is second to none when it comes to sleep. Also, i didn´t notice skyrocketing tolerance like I did with xanax. Hard to get though...

Well as another insomniac I would have to say that Zopiclone is the best for me for effectiveness and quality of sleep if i'm not going to be using anything else. I don't take it daily so I don't know about toerance to that drug in particular. however, I also use a lot of benzos and although I am tolerant to them the Zopiclone still works for me. Sometimes 3.5mg (half) but a whole pill has worked for me consistantly.

If you are in the U.S. it is available as eszopliclone, which is just 1 isomer of Zopiclone. I believe it is the only one indicated for long term use (up to 6 months). Not sure the doses it is available but it is really just a pharmaceutical money grab so they can get a patent in the U.S. Not sold in Canada, not sure about elsewhere.

I you can find zopiclone at an IOP for less i would go for that.

Actually, I believe that Zaleplon (Sonata/Starnoc) is also indicated for long term treatment (up to 1 yr.).

I've only used Ambien and then a bunch of OTC's - the most effective so far has been Tylenol's "Simply Sleep" and this local drug store's generic (which seems odd, but it was). I actually have the best luck rotating a bit - it seems I get easily "used to" one of them, but changing it up seems to reset that a little. I guess it could be 100% psychological, but that's my experience.
