What are some tips for safer use of LSD?

1. Use antipsychotics or benzos for bad trips.

Thanks.

those are good to have around (i don't know where you are getting antipsychotics from but if they are your's, maybe think twice). I would make sure you are in a safe place with people that know what state you are in and are going to take care of you if the need arises. Make sure you have a place to unwind and relax, whether it be with music or removal from the situation. Water is nice too

Alcohol will help take the edge off if things get too intense for you to be comfortable with....

Learn how to keep bad trips from happening and how to get out of them if they start to happen...

I like to give the advice of before the trip write on a sheet of paper "i am on *insert substance*, things will eventually be back to normal and be alright, i took a drug and it is making me feel this way" and sign it.... sure any trip sitter can try and tell you that everything is going to be alright but the reminder from yourself in your own handwriting is always more believable....

My first acid trip was the happiest i have ever been, but i felt bat shit crazy during the peak and couldn't even remember what being sober and sane was like. But i kept in mind that it was the drug making me feel this way and that by the time the sun came up i would be back to normal so i just stopped worrying about it and enjoyed the rest of the trip....

I have not tried it personally but i have heard of another method to get yourself away from negative thoughts.... hold your thumb and index finger apart and try and figure out the distance between them, really think about it. Conventional thought would simply say 6 inches or so, but what exactly makes up an inch or any unit of measurement? its a simple question that you can put a good deal of thought into, and with the short attention span that comes with tripping by the time you finally decide on something whatever was bothering you is far gone....

You could also put your energy into painting, writing, playing an instrument, talking to someone or just try and work through whatever is bothering you....

^Good advice. Honestly, a shot of a strong liqueur will help take the edge off sufficiently for almost any situation of anxiety. IMO, benzos and ESPECIALLY antipsychotics should be reserved for only the most severe circumstances.

Music! For me, when I'm tripping, music becomes incredibly emotional and intense to the point where, with music on, my entire reality revolves around it- my emotions, thoughts, everything (CEV's, anyone?). So my emergency bad trip abort button is my PSP, loaded with music.

I usually have it set so that a calm happy song starts playing at the touch of a button (like RHCP), so if things start to get too intense for me, I put in my ear buds and turn it on. Suddenly, I'm surrounded by this incredible calm, happy music, which puts me into a calm, happy mood.

so true..I do this all the time...especially if I'm taking anything over 500mics...300-500 is pure bliss everytime for me...For anyone else though, different ranges/etc...yeah, jamaica gave out some great advice there. I tend to do this with RC's..not really with LSD...as I honestly know exactly what to expect each time with L...even though it's different every time...lol go figure.

EDIT: oh yeah, if you're a muscian, you'd be surprised about how calming picking up your guitar and singing/recording/etc...a really "in to it process" can be for your mind and you can actually very easily direct the trip to your own standards/desires this way...works for me

^Totally agree....tapping a drum can really center your mind when its spinning around like a mad thing- so does deep breathing, use of mantra's (one can invent there own- I like All You Need Is Love personally).

Benzo's and other chemical means of calming onself; are useful and should probably be part of every psychonauts knapsack. But only administered when anxiety becomes borderline crazy....I don't actualy find benzo's help tripping anxiety; I us them for day to day life. Tripping takes care of itself.....But it is not a bad idea to have an antipsychotic on hand, especially if you are tripping with people who are either new to drugs or unstable in some way already.

I've never been a fan of having something for anxiety - I always think that thinking you'll need something for anxiety causes more anxiety in the first place.

^That is true; but if your perhaps the most experienced tripper with a group of less experienced, and your introduing them to a drug, it can be responsible to have something for someone who might lose it. But yeah. I remember one trip (well before I was dependant on benzo's) where I had a 2mg xanax 'just in case'. I was at a big confusing doof and having a fucking ball, but stupidly I kept getting really worried about losing the xanax- and so kept checking for it about every half and hour, often over and over again for ten minutes or so...Turns out I lost it anyway and only realised when I was fully down and eating hash :D

Having benzos handy for high dose trips is a good idea - I don't think it does predispose one to eat them simply because you have them.

It's always good to have someone to cuddle up with as well. <3

Having the ability to make hot drinks & food ( which really ought to be hot buttered toast ;) ) also can be of help in distracting a distressed person.

Don't you mean having someone to make hot food and drinks? last time I tried cooking on acid I actually set my toaster on fire. Yeah.

Avoid eating more than one or two hits at a time when the batch is of unknown potency.

On the other hand, having benzos and knowing that I can take them if I feel I need them usually obliterates any anxiety I experience. I don't need to actually take them to get rid of the anxiety, is all.

Also, having a comfortable environment is a necessity, but IME it's even better to have access to a few different places within a reasonable distance of each other where one can trip comfortably. This way I don't feel cooped up and moving to a different room/house/forest/greenhouse/gallery/etc. has always helped me maneuver out of any weird spots I might slide into.

^Yes- one must retain the ability to at least make a cup of tea. My egoloss experiences are typified by an inability to do so...:)

I once managed to make a gourd of yerba mate while peaking on LSD (no easy feat!). I have no memory of actually doing so, but I do remember drinking it and wondering how it got into my hands since I was alone in my apartment at the time. Normally I have a hard time even operating a music player whilst that far out (in?) there, and just thinking that I was boiling water on an open-flame stove while blanked out on acid makes my skin crawl. :\

Another vote for tea and toast here. In fact any sweet, warm, milky drink seems to calm me down if things are getting hectic - just getting up, going to the kitchen and putting the kettle on often does the trick. From memory, there's a chemical in milk that soothes you anyway. Certainly seems to for me.

Also, if things are just spinning out of control I find lying down - preferably in bed wrapped in a duvet if it's chilly - closing my eyes and breathing helps a lot. Calming music, as has already been mentioned, I find very useful too - sometimes I find some music that I would normally love to be quite disturbing whilst tripping.

On the sedative issue, I always have some benzos on hand "just in case" although I use them incredibly rarely whilst actually tripping - very occasionally I may take 5-10mg of diazepam on the come-up if it's a particularly rough one. I would usually use them - if at all - when the fireworks are over to get rid of the cracked-out feeling that some psyches - especially the long-acting or relatively high bodyload types - and just get cosy. GBL does the same thing for me, but many don't like the mental clouding that it brings, but I find it very relaxing. Addmitedly I use it a lot anyway... Tea (or even better Horlicks or hot chocolate) is again vital at this point.

Basically, anything that makes you feel comfortable, cosy and safe. Or just something to distract you - sometimes I'll watch something comedic on the come-up to create a happy headspace and pleasing diversion. And, as Mr B mentioned, someone to cuddle and communicate with is probably the best cure for bad trips you can get :D

Personally, I find the come-up to be the prime offender for dodgy mental states. Once the trip proper starts I'm generally too entranced and wrapped-up in what's happening to worry anymore. Also, as Issy mentioned, the expectations you go in with can make a big difference. I'd put money on the idea that the vast majority of bad trips come from worrying about bad trips. I don't think I've ever really had a properly bad trip - just some hairy moments that felt like forever but are nothing of the sort.

Good luck, don't worry too much, and happy tripping :)<3:)
