What are some interesting jobs that don't require an education?

I'm finishing up my college education with a BA in English, a nearly worthless degree. Fortunately, my parents have decided to pay for undergraduate education for my brother and I; therefore, I won't have any loans to pay, my car is paid off, and I don't have any credit card debt. Basically, my life is a blank slate, waiting to be painted.

I'm trying to find a job that doesn't suck, and pays just enough to let me get by without stressing about the next paycheck. Some time of skilled trade, perhaps?

So! what are some jobs that fit that category?

The Merchant Navy if that's your thing. There are apprenticeships and graduate positions available whereby you earn and learn at the same time. Get to see the world and earn a decent living and it isn't a branch of the Armed Forces.

I kind of want to find something locally... I live in one of the coolest places I've had the privilege to be.

Oh ok. Well what are you interested in? A business career or a career in an electrical job or maybe engineering?

I've applied for a few Trainee Quantity Surveyor positions whereby, again, they'll pay you to work and learn at a college at the same time but I dunno if that would interest you.

I'm not really sure what I'm interested in. If I knew, I'd probably be pursuing it. Up til now I'm sort of just going through the motions of life because I was expected to.

Maybe somebody with an English degree will wander in here and give me some suggestions for jobs that actually require an English degree!

Modeling. I did it for years, and it was more rewarding and strenuous than the career I went to college for!

hand modeling?

I'm good looking, but not model material!

I just looked at your profile. Are you from NYC? If so, my slightly successful experience with finding and maintaining a job in NYC says to me that all jobs there, from the ones requiring years of schooling to the lowly and truly gruelling ones, are cutthroat. It's all about who you're in with. You could doubtless land something probably pretty well-paying, compared to the American heartland, in towing, construction/contracting, carpentry, or anything to do with cars, in the greater NY area. If you know someone who's already in it and will train you.

Ever thought of running your own small business? Plenty of people with a bachelor's end up working for themselves. Anyone in your family run a business?

Can't you teach in some states now with a BA?

I've always wanted to work for Consumer Reports, and get to test out paper towels and toilet bowl cleaners and appliances and stuff. I think that would be the best job ever, but I don't know how one would go about that or if you need a degree or what. Not really relevant, I just wanted to get that out =D

BTW... So jealous of your clean slate and congrats on completing school! I would think that the possibilites are endless for you now!! Good luck!

I've been trying to figure out the same thing: what do I do with myself? I'm reading this book called Now What? by Nicholas Lore. It's pretty interesting. Give me a day or so and I'll tell you how it was.

work on a cruise ship. i have had several friends who graduated with less than useful degrees who spent a few months cruising around hawaii. it pays well because it follows US labor laws and you get paid for overtime, which you will accumulate a fair bit of. and your room and board is taken care. and its like a giant orgy down in the crew quarters.

Ive also been wondering where to focus my mind for a career.
Im pretty smart, got a full scholarship to FSU straight out of high school, but dropped out after 1 semester. I was drawn to pursue a much different lifestyle for awhile, and now I want to do something with my smarts, but something meaningful and progressive.
Im interested to see what people suggest here ~

Pretty much every job I've had has been in the food service industry. I'm not talking McDonalds, but local wineries and bistros, etc... From washing dishes to bussing to food prep and semi-sous chef. Summers jobs, ya know? But they are obviously seasonal, don't pay well, really require no intelligence, and are basically a waste of time. Then again, I'd rather work with people I like and have a good time, while only getting paid $10/hour. :\

That sounds interesting, let me know how it is!
