Title says it all. Always kinda wondered this, but never looked into it.

Binders are needed to keep a pill shaped like a pill. You can't just press any old drug into pill form - it may not have the physical properties to hold its shape, it'll just crumble in your hands. Often, if the doses are small too, it needs to be bulked out so the pill is a standardized side.

What he said....

just look at the words...

binders: keeps the molecules together in pill form...

fillers: fills up the rest of the pill to hold it's shape...

^nOAN and Doug2113's responses are spot-on. They're there to hold the pill together and help it keep its shape.

They're inactive and inert and in the grand scheme of things don't really make a difference once the pill has hit your stomach acid :)

Imagine 1mg pills that would weigh 1mg... Impossible. So they weigh 150mg in order to get ingested easier.

All of these answer are pretty much right

Some binders and fillers are added to discourage recreational use aswell (The Oxycontin OPs)

Sometimes the binders/fillers help absorbtion, speed up disintegration of pills, increase solubility, add flavor, deter abuse/extraction, preserve against spoilage, or provide extended/delayed release.
