what am i doing wrong? (diet question)

Calcium is heaps important too.. I've noticed that by having some wheatbix for breakfast every day with lots of milk it's made a huge difference. I noticed the difference when Beroccas put out the beroccas with calcium in them too..

I was reading the other day that if you don't have enough calcium in your system then your body essentially goes into a 'starvation mode' where it thinks you're devoid of minerals so it tries to hoard everything or somethign along those lines.. There will be people on here that probably know more than me so they might be able to explain it better..

and atkins... well he died FAT didn't he? hmm? that diet is a crock. you need to learn how to eat well and excercise well in order to keep it off... </rant>

weight training wont make you lose a lot of weight, but it helps to becoming fit/toned all around.

it might seem like you've been at this for a while, but really a month is not long enough to expect to see results. Your body is mostly treating your new habits as a temporary phase. In another month it will be adapting to this as normal, and you will get visible results.
the heavey vs light weights debate goes on forever it seems. Heavier weights help build muscle mass. More muscle mass requires more calories to maintain, so even whilst you are sitting idle, you get a fat burning benefit. light weights/cardio will give some fat-burning benefits whilst you do them, but less benefit in the off-time. away from that tho, cardio gives you fitness benefits. Balance both for all-round results.
Since you are quite new into it, don't get excited and overdo things. It's very easy to think you can double the weights every week, tear a muscle inthe gym, and never want to go back, or run much longer distances, and suddenly you find it hard to fit in those 2 hour runs every day.
varitaion in your excercise routines is necessary when your body gets used to the same stuff, but that's more than a month into a routine. varitaion is more important now so you don't get bored. Instead of a run go cycling or something like that. Do a class at the gym instead of lifting weights.
And most of all, don't weigh yourself every day. Your body weight will fluctuate a fair bit due to water/fluid intake and expiry. Weight once a week and treat it like the stock market. Short term fluctuations are normal, look at the longer term trend.
and to those who think it's funny that someone calling themselves tubby gives fitness advise, this came about cos when I stopped lifting weights (cos I got bored with it) the massive appetite didn't stop :)

i guess a month isn't that long. :)

i did notice today that i my scrub top that i wear to work is loser around the middle. even though i haven't lost any more weight, i think i'm shrinking.

YAY!

thanks for the advice everyone. keep it comin if ya got it!

no eating after 8pm, CUT OUT THE BEER. If you drink beer it negates your workouts, so if you must booze it up just do it once on the weekend. Not more then twice as then it inhibits your workouts for most of the week!

Sounds like your on the right track, keep up the good work.

i rarely drink, so that's not a big deal. i do work at night which makes it hard to do things like eating ever couple hours b/c i'm too busy and i sleep all day, so i can't do it then. i never eat before i go to bed in the morning, which is good, but my eating schedule is just messed up b/c of the 11-7 lifestyle.

One of the best ways to go about weight loss for females seems to be a lot of cardio combined with a little weight training. Combined, they will get your metabolism where it needs to be, and once you get to that point, you will burn more calories throughout the course of the day even several hours after your cardio.

A few extra tips:

-Exercise before eating. It gets your body in calorie-burning mode before you dine.

-Make sure you get your daily intake of water and cut out caffeinated drinks. They will mess with your metabolism.

I had another good one....but my mind just went blank so if I remember I'll edit.

some random stuff, i don't know if it's all true or not.

- always eat breakfast, cuz it sets your metabolism for the rest of the day
- eat less, more frequently (instead of 2 or 3 huge meals)
- don't need to eat whenever you're hungry

also, some personal stuff, might not have any relevance at all...i drink a good amount of water. there's always a glass sitting in my room, and i always fill one up before i go to sleep. i spit a lot...wish i didn't, but i can't help it. playing sports such as hockey or basketball tends to get me in shape much faster/better than running...i honestly don't think running does anything. as far as weight loss, not sure, but to get fit i would suggest those sports, the kind where you have to start/stop/change direction/etc. when i played hockey in high school, any fat i had would just disappear. it'd come back in the off-season, but when i played it'd all go away.

well i had a good post in my mind, but i feel like i'm just slopping crap together right now haha...so i'll end it here.

ps- i have the opposite problem...i need to gain weight. i've been working out/drink protein shakes for the last month or so...i can definitely notice the muscle/definition, but i'm not putting on lbs. what foods are good for this? i've heard like potatoes for one...any others? right now i eat a lot of fried stuff, burgers and pizza. need to get food tomorrow though so suggestions are welcome :)

^^^^^ Bananas, wholewheat breads, avocados, low-fat (as opposed to no-fat) dairy products, peanut butter, dried fruit and nuts, fruit smoothies, starchy vegetables like potatoes and corn are some suggestions for healthy weight gain. By that I mean low in saturated fat, high in fibre.

Lucky thing!! Imagine having to GAIN weight.

i can't drink a lot of water due to a medical condition that i have with my bladder. if it gets too full, i am more likely to get a bladder infection.

i do drink water, but there is no way i can drink 8-10 glasses of water a day or i will def. get an infection.

Definitely don't drink anything except water and tea...avoid calorific drinks.

For me, the only thing that really works (other than running 60 miles a week) is not eating much at night, and not eating past 6-7 pm. Generally I will have salad or some steamed vegetables and maybe a bit of tofu for dinner. I rarely eat any carbs at night.

I also eat normal sized lunches and gigantic breakfasts, so that I'm not as hungry later in the day.

For me, I can lose about 5 lbs in a week by doing this...though I am sure it is partly due to my high metabolism.

Oh and yeah...long distance running is AMAZING for weight loss.

Good luck hun! :)

Oh, and I get a shitload of UTIs. If you have health insurance, talk to your dr about getting some antibiotics to take after every time you have sex/masturbate. Also, I find that drinking 1/3 cranberry juice and 2/3 water combo really cuts down on the UTIs. Dried cranberries are even more effective.

Healthy weight loss is 1 - 1 1/2 pounds per week, so 5 pounds since Feb. 01 is right on target! You just have to remember that you don't gain 30 pounds in a month (hopefully) so you won't lose that quickly either. I think 5 pounds per month is excellent progress!

^^^
that's all i really wanted to hear. thanks love.

and about the UTIs. i don't get them from sex or anything like that. i get them b/c my bladder is worn out. kind of like an old person. when i pee, it doesn't fully empty, so i'm not supposed to drink a lot of fluids.

Weight traing builds muscle, the more muscle you have the more you burn at rest, so don't forget to lift. You don't have to go iin there and stack the plates as high as you can, but u should include some resitince training (sorry for all the s/p but I'm rather drunk at the moment). I've been dieting for awihle now. I was 320 lbs (yes dear god) i'm down to 270(yea me) i was down to 250 but backed off for a bit an gained a bit back( bad me). and when i'm hitting the wights good, i can do more cardio and over all lose faster.

I find that relationship problems are a great way to produce stress-induced weight loss.

Something no one mentioned....
I do about 25 minutes of cardio 3-4 times a week, and then I do some HARD CORE weight training. Im not talking 35 reps with a 5 lb weight- max out. Most women WILL NOW get beefy looking- as long as you have normal hormone levels your not going to get huge. However, maxing out like that with two sets, waiting only about 30 seconds between each set, burns SO many more calories than low weight-high reps because your working your ass off and your heartrate goes way up. I found that my cardio got easier and I lost almost as much weight when I switched down to doing 15 minutes of cardio and doubled my weight curcuits (because I had bronchitis and was totally unable to do anything that caused me to breathe heavily)
Oh, the downside- your gonna gain muscle mass, and I have a hard time fitting into a lot of clothes because I already had big hips and thighs (go genetics) and now since im more muscly its harder to "pour" myself into clothes...same with my arms. My uper arms are a lot bigger than most long sleeve shirts for juniors would allow...

But hey- i think its a nice problem to have! PLUS i love knowing that I'm strong and that if something were to happen, I would be strong enough to help myself
Its not every day that you see a 125lb girl who can leg press 180 lbs :) [/endbrag]

Zarah- I'm having some success with a modified high protein diet. 5 pounds in about 9 days- plus running myself ragged going to the city all the time. :)

You don't eat much meat or cheese... but could you tolerate eating a meal that is mostly a lean source of protein and cut down on the carbs? Do you like chicken or turkey? Instead of snacking on stuff like crackers I'll splurge on premium cold cuts from the deli of lean meats such as chicken, ham and roast beef (mmm pastrami) and munch on those in the late afternoon when my cravings go wild.

I've eliminated all refined sugar and bleached flour from my daily intake. I eat potatoes sparingly- and they're my FAVORITE, but I have to maintain self control. Spicy foods (especially curry) seem to speed up the metabolism and they contain natural painkillers to soothe those muscles after a good workout.

If I drink alcohol, it's 1 glass of wine or if I want to have a slight binge diet soda or seltzer with vodka.

Stair climbing is the exercise that is kicking my ass the most as of late, and I don't mean the cheesy machine. I go up and down 4 flights of stairs. It hurts, it really does... but it's working.

:)
