Several West African countries produce oil. In Nigeria oil production is one their largest source of income although some say that internet scams are a close second if not the biggest source of income. You know the old, "I'm the widow of an oil millionaire with a huge amount of cash hidden in a trunk at a security company and I need your help to move it out of Africa". In addition to that diamonds are also a huge industry in W Africa as is gold.
 
yeah static_mind, just because the government & people are extremely poor, doesn't mean there is nothing worth taking.

just means that, if there is, it IS being taken.
and it is, pretty much exclusively, by western mega- mining/extraction corporations (though the chinese are making inroads)...

that's why the governments are so weak there, because it is in the interest of the trans-nationals.

Even though I think their political views are extremely radical, I still love the Dead Kennedys. My boyfriend, who had been a reporter and editor for several newspapers for many years, said Jello Biafra was the strangest person he's ever interviewed. LOL
