So there it is, we’ll never really be alone, will we?
She’ll always be somewhere in the penumbral, the periphery.
Dull hints of a perfume that isn’t yours, sweet scents of
a presence ever-paused.
A failure to launch a never properly thought-
out plan about how we can bridge the gap when the ropes are torn.
Sorry, behind you, I thought I saw someone moving,
it’s just the plant; do carry on – please - with whatever you were saying.

wonderful. favorite part: "A failure to launch a never properly thought-
out plan about how we can bridge the gap when the ropes are torn."

A bit like this; "if you meet a loner, no matter what they tell you, it's not because they enjoy solitude.
It's because they have tried to blend into the world before, and people continue to disappoint them."
--J.P.

I read this poem not about being alone but about having the shadow of a past relationship present between two people that are now in a relationship.

Yes. it´s from a novel she wrote. Very compelling, about someone who was brought up to the world uniquely to save her sister regardless of her will.
That part suits me when feelings of solitude are brought up, which was the case in the novel, the secret and all.
That´s why I quoted the phrase.
