Welcome to Meth-stralia: Shocking extent of Australia’s illegal online drug trade exposed

A NEWS.COM.AU investigation has exposed the shocking extent of Australia’s online drug trade, with $7.5 million in illicit substances available to buy in any given week.
By data mining listings on the leading Dark Web marketplace, Agora, news.com.au can reveal that Australian dealers offered more than 9000 individual listings of drugs during the seven-day period analysed.
Stimulants — including methamphetamines, cocaine and speed — were the most readily available class of drugs, with 56 sellers offering 2060 listings.

Over the week examined, the total inventory for stimulants was worth $2.5 million, with an average listing price of $1191.
Ecstasy and cannabis were the next most-listed items.

New sellers constantly enter the market, and the top tier can offload as much as an estimated $800,000 each month.

The news.com.au analysis found that Australia’s top dealer, “TheProfessionals”, has an estimated total income of $3.3 million selling about $824,266 worth of drugs a month.

Australia is an important player on the global black market for drugs, with one in three listings for methamphetamine and Codeine, an opioid pain medicine, coming from Australia. One in four listings for heroin and the psychedelic DMT (N,N-Dimethyltryptamine) are from Australia, as are 37 per cent of all listings of Oxycodone, another opioid pain medication.
These figures represent only a snapshot of the larger industry, with at least 10 other marketplaces active on the Dark Web, a network of anonymous sites that hide the identity of the creators and their IP (internet protocol) addresses.
People can access the dark web via a special browser, which similarly hides the identity of visitors and makes transactions nearly impossible to track.'

Are the reporters so clueless that they don't realise they are doing free advertising for drug dealers? We aren't supposed to list sources for drugs on bl, but a media expose will tell you who is selling the most drugs, what marketplace to use and what drugs you can buy. just incase you didn't know about buying drugs online already.

Media (and occasionally research) comes out every couple of years that declares Australians use proportionately more drugs than most other countries.

It's bizarre, because drugs are incredibly expensive here compared to other countries. I guess everyone's just used to the high costs.

In the early to mid 90's pills here used to go for twice what they are going for these days, imagine that! It was common. I guess the quality was alot better though.

Space cadets.

I've noticed that australia does have quite a preference for meth compared to a lot of other countries. Are there any aussie's that may be able to offer clues as to why it's such a popular drug of choice over there? Is it just that it's the most easily produced drug there? Lax chemical laws? Australians just like to be up more than down?

Maybe because coke is a few hundred dollars a gram?

I've read that a lot of it is imported from Asian gangs in China...the labs there supposedly make a high-purity product.

There probably are a fair number of domestic producers though too. Really I don't see what's happening in Australia is any different from the meth "moral panic" in the USA during the late 1990's/early 2000's, which occurred everywhere but especially in the western and Midwestern USA...in the late 60's it was LSD that was the boogeyman, in the late 70's it was PCP, in the late 80's it was crack cocaine, and in the late 90's it was meth. The tone of the stories seems similar, full of lurid tales of deranged tweakers lunging at cops with knives and "filthy drug labs"...

Now it seems to be back to heroin, the ol' standby. At least here in the USA.

I think it is partly due to the proximity to asia where most of the meth is produced or where precursors are easily obtained from. Australia conducts a lot of legitimate trade with China and other asian countries so there is a supply chain which can be used to piggy back contraband into the country. Anything imported from Mexico or South America will be closely scrutinised by customs.

Most of the chemicals used to produce meth are common household products available in any country. If anything our strict chemical laws probably encourage drugs like meth rather than more exotic drugs with difficult to obtain precursors.

I doubt aussies are more predisposed to uppers. Cannabis is the most popular illegal drug here by a long shot. Heroin was also a wildly popular in the nineties due to a glut in the market but usage appears to have levelled off in more recent times.

And it's also generally terrible.

Pills are generally popular, but really inconsistent - I don't know what it's like these days, but even when we were in an era of "good pills" there was still a huge amount of stuff floating around that was not MDMA. Now with RCs/NPS - who knows what you're getting?

Meth is really stigmatised, but it's honestly one of the few substances you can buy at the moment and a) be pretty certain you're getting what you asked for and b) be reasonably sure of getting something good quality.
