Fortunia several studies have shown that the UN treaties you're referring to do not prohibit countries from relaxing legal restrictions on the personal use or cultivation of marijuana.

That's a common argument trotted out by prohibitionists (not saying you're one of them of course!) but it's just not the case.

The DEA's going to shut it down. :/ Or at least, they're going to try to.

Not to get into politics, but with Obama re-elected I don't think there's that big of a chance of this happening. He backed medical marijuana and said he wouldn't intervene ( I do realize some dispensaries had issues with feds, but majority didn't). Romney didn't want anything to do with medical marijuana, or have recreational use for responsible adults and said he'd be coming after them. I feel like on THIS subject, we're pretty safe but you're right it's all speculation right now and there is a possibility.

Congrats people from Colorado and Washington and way to stand up and overcome. This is a monumental moment in history and I'm hoping more states will follow in the future.

Since when has the US federal government been too worried about UN treaties? I'm pretty sure Guantanamo breaches more than one or two International laws.

Absolutely!!! Australia is also abusing the UN Refugee Convention and treating boat people horrifically! We might as well lock up the boat people in a Guantanamo type jail/torture chamber all the good it will do them being shipped to Malaysia . We are happy to accept people with money by aeroplane but not those in need fleeing from fuck knows what.

We will also have up to 2500 marines running around playing soldier in Darwin in no time. What have any of us learned from Rembrance day? War is healthy for economic growth?

We told the UN to go fuck itself back in 2003

sounds about right. next you will be telling china how to run its economy :|

He has been sworn to uphold the laws of the United States and that includes current Federal Drug law as well as U.N. Treaties which hold the force of law according to our Constitution.

did he swear on the bible? ever heard of charles darwin?

It (Guantanamo) may be technically "legal" but I totally agree that it is absolutely inhumane and immoral.

agreed. its still up and running though? even though guantanamo is technically/strategically in cuba and not the states it is still a blight on nth america and all its people. this i believe is recognised world wide.

Congrats people from Colorado and Washington and way to stand up and overcome. This is a monumental moment in history and I'm hoping more states will follow in the future.

agreed! lets hope the progress spreads right throughout the western world. thats (ganja) at least one thing muhammads crew definitely has well and truly over the wino freak jesus and all his followers.

Really have no idea how this is going to play out, I do not think the DEA/Federal Government is going to shut it down though. Way too few resources right now, and polling shows that attitudes are shifting. The President has been pretty responsive to polls (example: Gay Marriage, Ending DADT, Lilly Ledbetter, acknowledging the people's call for higher taxes on the wealthy) and I doubt he wants to get involved, especially considering the fact that despite predictions, large amounts of young voters came out again.

Really, I think more and more states are going to start doing this. I actually would not be surprised if the President comes out in support of Medical Marijuana and a change in the classification of the drug (moving it to a Class 3 or something).. if the country keeps moving towards legalization then even that maybe. I really do not think the United States is that far away from legalization of Marijuana.. especially if we get the right people in office. The Senate would be pretty responsive to it right now, the House not so much.

As for the UN, its an important body but they cannot dictate drug laws inside the United States. Some of this fear of the UN seems like its coming right out of the early 1950s.. pretty silly.

Over the last 20 years, especially the last 10 or so, American attitudes towards many things have rapidly been softening. The United States is changing rapidly and many are starting to adopt a pretty progressive attitude. I wouldn't be surprised if the US becomes one of the leaders when it comes to legalizing Marijuana.

Okay guys. I am just as happy as you about the legal;ization. I let this thread stay up awhile so we could all say "Yay!!!"

But the rules state we are NOT allowed to discuss and debate the legality of Cannabis in this forum.

This thread is going into big time debates about our government, and honestly there is a reason our Legal Advice area of bluelight was closed.

Lets get back to discussing Cannabis, not the government.
