water suicide

A friend of mine died by drinking 4.5 liters of water (ice tea) within a short period of time. His parents found him dead in his bedroom with three empty 1.5 litre bottles of ice tea, he probably killed himself because he was depressed. His parents knew he was experimenting with drugs, so one can't rule out the possibility that he thought he could get high that way.

Therefore I want to warn everybody not to have the illusion that drinking huge amounts of fluids within a short period of time can get you high, instead of that it will get you killed!

Sorry to hear about this - it is a horrible thing to lose a friend to suicide.

Do you know any details on this - had he taken and drugs etc?

Some substances can make a person feel very hot and thirsty and some people do not understand the risks involved by drinking too much water etc.

Hi Bearlove, as normal in such cases they did an autopsy, but no drugs were found.
Seen the circumstances they think it was suicide, but as I wrote above one can't rule out that he thought he could get high by drinking a lot in a short period of time.

Yes it sucks hard to loose somebody that way, and also because I have read another thread here of somebody claiming he drank more than 30 liters of water without dying (which I doubt very much) I thought I better warn everybody here.

I wouldn't rule out that he was just extremely thirsty and accidentally drank a little too much water. When I was younger there were many times when I would drink large amounts of iced tea to the point of extreme stomach pain.

I had no idea people actually tried to get messed up from drinking water. hopefully this doesn't catch on- you know considering the availability

We'd have to schedule water then, make it prescription-only and such. Cause you know, the War on Drugs and all that.

People DO get intoxicated off this method, but it is extremely risky, plenty of people have died from this.

I have never heard of anyone deliberately doing this in an attempt to get 'high' - water intoxication isn't really something to mess around with.

Hmmm... oh dear. I'm terribly sorry to hear you've lost someone, especially in such a... manner. I'm not religious, but my thoughts and prayer go to you and his family.

And it sure wasn't my intention to make fun of people who use drugs, but obviously some people who use drugs like to make fun of someone who probably killed himself, or somebody who tries to prevent other people from doing so.
I wonder how some people can have preconceptions about people using drugs?

Am I reading right that people have attempted to get high off drinking a large amount of water in a short space of time!? Seriously!? I have no words......

No Opiatehell85, you are reading it wrong. It's just that they can't rule it out for sure.
Everybody thinks he committed suicide that way because he was depressed.
Thank you Xorkoth.
