My best friend has recently been going through some tough times. He thinks he has social anxiety and is depressed, which when he told me was a total shock! I mean this kid is always smiling, always happy, I had no idea. When I brought it up the convo never got too deep but he told me he had been taking prozac. I believe its now been switched to zoloft and abilify. Nasty shit in my opinion, and as a friend, I wanted to give him an MDMA experience to hopefully clear his mind and get him tuned back ionto his true self, with no need for those pills.

So, I was hoping to roll with him this weekend. Should he stop taking the meds now up until the roll? Or will it negate the MDMA totally either way? He doesnt like the side effects of the pills at all and Id really like to give him a 6 hour (hopefully) cure than him rely on a process that could take years... Any ideas?

Appreciate it BL :)

The half-life of prozac is ~4 days for someone who has been taking it regularly for some time, which incredibly long. The normal rule of thumb of most anti-depressants is you have to wait at least 2 weeks to have any effects from MDMA, but with prozac I would imagine it could take a bit longer.

As far as I know zoloft is an SSRI which will negate the effect of MDMA. I used to be on Effexor XR and even after 6 weeks of not taking it I consumed 100mgs of high quality MDMA with zero effect. I think if your friend is being prescribed these meds from a doctor it's probibly not a great idea to have him stop taking his meds.

If he's only been on them for a month and he really wants to take xtc with you I think because he hasn't been on the meds for too long he might be ok. But I would suggest waiting at least 2 to 3 weeks before dosing.

That's exactly right....
No one should quit taking their antidepressants to roll.. They've been prescribed for a reason....

I would venture to say most people on anti-depressants dont need them, just like most of the people of adderall, benzos, pain killers, etc...

if I was perscribed some type of anti-depressant I know I wouldnt take it, if Im gonna do long term damage to my brain/serotonin Im gonna have some fun doing it.

now of course many people do really NEED these medications to get by, thats not what Im talking about. Doctors give out hard drugs like their whips at a slave auction

^You got it bro. He doesn't even feel as if he needs them, and I certainly don't either. I figured they used in in psychotherapy for a reason; extremely high success rates.

To echo others, if your friend is on SSRI's, it's not safe or wise to go off them in order to have an MDMA experience. Though I think MDMA can be quite healing and useful, he's simply not in a position to enjoy it fully and safely as someone prescribed an SSRI.

There is also the potential for more harm if you attempt to roll while on a SSRI, especially considering he may not feel anything and choose to take more.

Ultimately, it's not your call to persuade him to go off SSRIs so he can share the experience with you- not only would it likely take a couple weeks of being off his meds, but the result could be devastating.

Thanks for the responses everyone. Until he's been off them for a while I'll forget about the idea.

Quick final question! Low-dose 4-aco-dmt trip instead? Prozac/zoloft don't affect psilocybin nearly as much.

If your friend is on these medications and has confided in you that he has been suffering from mental health issues, he should not be using MDMA. He should stay on his medications. You two can go and do something else fun together, maybe some activity that does not depend upon a substance to make that activity fun.

I have mental health issues, myself. In my past I had my time with drugs. They ended up causing more problems for me than they were worth after the 'honeymoon' phase was over. Drugs + any mental health issues = more problems than the mental health issues on their own. I had to learn this the hard way.

Let's say you do encourage your friend to stop taking his medications, keeping in mind that these medications may be helping him to stay healthy and live a productive life. What if he enjoys MDMA so much that he doesn't feel like he needs his meds anymore? What if he begins self-medicating with MDMA and then other drugs to mask the symptoms of his depression and other issues? Don't you think that such behavior could compound his already existing issues? It's probably best for him to stay away from most drugs and to stay on his meds.

I know that, without my medications, I wouldn't be able to hold a job, have meaningful relationships, or think that life was worth living at all. Drugs don't usually mix well with mental health issues of any kind.

You and your friend can still have an awesome time together without having to do drugs. If he's such a good friend you'll realize that his mental and physical health are pretty damned important things, and you'll respect his choice to properly treat his issues with the right medications.

MDMA and other drugs won't "cure" mental health issues. Believe me. I thought my experiments as a psychonaut would improve my life, solve all of my issues, answer my questions, and make me a better person. Nope. I was just deluded and, in the end, my use of psychedelics and other drugs only made my issues much, much worse. I know that a lot of drug users think that pharmaceutical medications are "evil". I don't get this, really. Without my meds I wouldn't be alive today. Without my meds my life wouldn't be worth living, really. Meds could really turn your friend's life around. Recreational drugs could just cause him to ignore the fact that he needs to be treated properly and it could ruin his life.

Thank you embers_fading, it means a lot to hear it from someone who's been down that path and back. We'll probably just get together and have a heart-to-heart about all this. Thanks again everyone

i want to hear from some sure experienced users whether or not Abilify (aripiprazole) negates the effects of Molly (pure MDMA). This is purely a knowledge based curiosity. Please respond as soon as possible.

Stopping medication to roll is not something to be taken lightly.

I did it after being on and off anti-depressants for years, but I had only been back on Prozac for a few weeks, and didn't start Abilify until after my roll. Prozac has a shorter half life than other SSRI's, but any SSRI will block MDMA until it's out of your system. I was off the Prozac for 5 days and rolled successfully, and I believe it was a good decision for me, but only your friend can decide if it is a good decision for him. I personally hated the way SSRI's made me feel. The Abilify was pretty well tolerated, although it made sleep a little difficult, and I began to get some pretty gnarly twitches from it. I'm glad to say I've been off all the meds for coming up on a year now.
