Waiting to Die in Prison—for Selling a Couple of Bags of Pot

"Darkness cannot be dissipated with more darkness.
Even as more Americans toke up legally, many are still rotting behind bars for marijuana offenses.

Editor's note: In the next few weeks, President Obama is expected to commute the sentences of dozens of federal inmates behind bars for nonviolent drug offenses, according to the New York Times.

It's just after 9 p.m. near the corner of Fourth and Marshall, a poor part of Shreveport, Louisiana. A homeless man approaches a guy on the street and asks him what he's looking for. That guy, an undercover cop, says he wants "two dimes" and promises a $5 commission. And Fate Vincent Winslow, knowing that $5 buys a meal, if not a great one, agrees. Minutes after he returns carrying two crumpled bags of marijuana, worth $10 each, he's in the backseat of a squad car. Three months later, Winslow is found guilty of selling a Schedule I Controlled Dangerous Substance. Another three months and the sentence lands: life imprisonment at hard labor with no chance for parole.

Winslow's punishment—to die behind bars, for a transaction involving a minuscule quantity of pot—is hard to believe. But it's not unique. Every year, more people are arrested for pot possession than violent crimes. Around 40,000 people are currently serving time for offenses involving a drug that has been decriminalized or legalized in 27 states and Washington, DC. Even as Americans' attitudes toward pot have mellowed, the law has yet to catch up, leaving pot offenders subject to draconian sentences born out of the war on drugs. As David Holland, a criminal-defense attorney in New York City who filed a presidential clemency petition for marijuana lifers in 2012, puts it: "The world has changed, but these poor bastards are still sitting in jail."

Writing from the notorious maximum-security Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola, Winslow told me how he'd come to face "the great injustice that is upon me." As a kid, he dropped out of high school and landed on the streets, "hanging with the wrong crowd." At 17 he was convicted of simple burglary; he later got eight and a half years for rifling through an unlocked car. A decade later, he was caught with some coke. "I always had a job," he writes—working in chicken plants, building houses. Yet his encounter with the undercover cop in 2008 branded him a habitual offender under Louisiana law, triggering an automatic life sentence. "Life for two bags of weed," he writes. "People kill people and get five years."

^ But the marihuana makes black men rape white women!!

Yep. That age old Reefer Madness chestnut.

I will tell you what DOES cause rape...

Male genital mutilation. A man who was circumcised as an infant has statistically a much higher chance of raping a woman.

May I suggest one?

I actually don't mean to make fun, because I agree with Flynnal that circumcision is bizarre and even cruel.
But he certainly has made a reputation for repeatedly seeing it as relevant to various cultural phenomena, so I wondered if it might be fitting.

But, in all seriousness, I can agree with the statement that circumcision is genital mutilation. Have you ever seen what it looks like? This image is not for the faint of heart.

Some of the best skin on the entire body, needlessly cut off.

So, Flynnal, you can rest assured that at least some people share your view, and now, can we please get back to the topic at hand? I am sure that there is a more appropriate place to discuss circumcision than a forum on drugs in the media.

Jesus fuck why did I open that NSFW even after reading your warning!!

OT: pretty sad honestly not like the people who would have bought pot from him didn't just find some other homeless guy to find them some after we was popped.

Really tho who scores their buds from a bum besides a cop..
shwagg any body?

too afraid to open it...

I am not familiar with the psychological consequences of .M.G.M, read it was really bad in Africa. There is hope though, at least one person is now able to reproduce after receiving a penis transplant.

Obama commuted/pardoned 46 drug offenders today. I believe its still less than his predecessor.

Got a good laugh out of one of the recent posts by Flynal.

list if interested:google>WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, President Barack Obama granted commutations of sentence to 46 individuals.

I agree with what you and Flynnal posted about circumcision.

I'm not sure who would just buy herb from a random person, let alone a random homeless person on the street?

I have had random people walk up to me in public or approach me and ask if I wanted to buy herb and I said no thanks since at the time I was living in an area with a lot of undercover cops, or the event I was at was notorious for attracting undercover cops.

It sucks that he's in prison for the rest of his life but at least he has shelter, food, and is not homeless anymore.

The sad part is that no matter hard I've tried to stop the nightmares from watching that video of a baby being mutilated in May last year, nothing seems to work.

What is the silver bullet? I can't get the screams out of my head, or the images.

What kind of drug can I use to help me function and be human again? I've tried a few SSRIs, one SNRI, Moclobemide, Valproate, Gabapentin, Pregabalin, Lamotrigine, Agomelatine, Mirtazapine, Alcohol, Benzos, Barbs, most Anti-Psychotics, Nicotine, Caffeine, and nothing works.

I don't want Nembutal, even though it makes life bearable, because I'll just take the whole lot and go to the promised land. The final solution, I know, but I don't want to see friends or family hurt.

Speaking of being in a prison and waiting to die...I think this thread title fits the bill so appropriate for the situation I have somehow found myself in. I feel like I'm in a prison, and yes, I'm actually waiting to die because nothing seems to work to help me live again. Maybe I am already dead, just my body is still alive.

That is pure bullshit.

Even if it WERE true you'd have no way of knowing if it wasn't just pure random correlation and you'd have to take into account the percentage of people who are circumcised vs uncircumcised overall etc.

I mean most men in that live in the United States are circumcised, so right there that kind of blows your whole argument out of the water if you decide to talk exclusively about rape in the U.S.

Why are there more rapes in the USA than there are in any other developed country?

You tell me.

Can we please get back to the main topic here?
I would really like to save discussion of circumcision for a place where it is relevant.
Maybe try circumcised.com?
But seriously, the fact that nearly every thread in a forum on DRUGS IN THE MEDIA involves discussion of circumcision is bizarre and unwarranted.
Please find another location to discuss this topic, or use pm.

Hey Priest, I understand your positive view on him now having shelter, food, etc in jail; however i would honestly rather be homeless and free than "taken care of," in custody. (I have experienced both situations). If he unfortunately has to serve a life sentence there really is no more hope for a better life. It so tragic and just, one of many, devastating results of this so called war on drugs.
