Confuser, I have ADHD and take Adderall, but not all the time, because I want to keep tolerance down. I tried the free trial of Vyvanse but sinece there's no generic for it yet, found it too expensive to get right now. Like you, I too have "natural" highs. I went back to college in 2000 to finish a college degree I started in 1982 but THIS time on medication. I got all A's, one B, and one C (I had NEVER had Algebra before) and graduated with a 3.86 out of a possible 4.0. Every time I got an A or did well at school, it gave me a natural "buzz", which kept me getting those A's, lol! See, anytime you succeed at something or feel good, dopamine is released and amphetamines also work on dopamine. Dopamine activates the brain's "reward" system. I guess the saying that "learning is it's own reward" actually means what it says! Incidentally, many of our biological functions are linked to dopamine release as well. For instance, the biggest single release of dopamine in our system is at the point of orgasm-which insures the continuation of the human race! Another example is eating-we get pleasure from eating, which keeps us eating, aside from hunger. Unfortunately, the brain's reward system can also nudge us over into overindulgence and addiction. ANYTHING that can feel good, and be good for us, in small amounts, can easily become the opposite if we go overboard. Success is good but being a "work-a-holic" is NOT. Overindulgence in sex and eating aren't good either. I think that a stimulant would probably affect anybody, ADD/ADHD or not, with maybe the only major difference being that stimulants relax ADD/ADHD peeps and "jack-up" other non-ADD/ADHD peeps.
