A little history. I've been on Adult ADD meds for 6 years now (I'm close to 30). I've been on Ritalin IR, Adderall IR and Concerta ER. First time I talked to my psych about it, I wasn't looking to get a prescription, I just explained my problems I was having at work.
I took some test and it said I had ADD. So, I was prescribed 20mg Ritalin IR twice a day. It worked OK for a while, then lost it's punch. I was upped to 20mg 3 times a day. That was good for about 2 years, then it kinda stopped working (I didn't abuse it either). So, I asked about Adderall, and he kinda looked at me funny.
Nonetheless he wrote me for 10mg Adderall IR 3 times a day. That worked pretty good for a year or two. Then I experimented with Concerta for a month, and hated it.
So, recently I asked about Vyvanse. I knew more about it than the doc did...Anyways, I know its early, but I think this is my favorite. I'm on 70mg once a day. I take it at 6:30am when I wake up, and by the time I'm at work an hour later, its in full effect. I know the ratio of Vyvanse to dexamphetamine (between 0.4 and 0.36), so a 70mg is like 28mg of dexamphetamine. The onset is real smooth and slow, but not too slow. Much better than that speedy, jittery ass Ritalin...
And since it need to be absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract, it is sorta like extended release. The peak intensity is at about 2-3 hours after ingestion. When the peak hits you, I'll admit, it feels pretty good, nice and euphoric. Then after 5 hours it slowly tapers off until about 4pm for me.
So, its better than Ritalin for obvious reasons, and I like it better than Adderall because on the smooth onset, long lasting effects, and the feeling at the peak is much better to me.
Anyone doubting Vyvanse should give it some thought. Yeah, I know it can't be (or is very difficult to) beat the chemicals to make the dexamp release all at once, but I'm not really into that (was years ago). But 70mg gets me through a day, makes me feel good, boosts my focus and confidence, and has no bad side effects as I see it. Anyone trying to get on some type of dexamp med should give this a try. One caveat, insurance is a must. It's expensive stuff.
