Volunatary work.

I was thinking of doing some voluntary work at a local pub (for the experience) as I would like to get a job as a barman/waiter because I know that there can be good money with these kinda jobs and there are usually tips. I was just wondering, if I actually did get a voluntary job at this pub, how long do you think I would have to 'work' there in order for me to gain satisfactory experience and then putting in on my cv/resume?

Also, are there any bluelighters that have voluntary jobs at the moment and if you do, what are they, and what is it like?

There's a difference between barwork and being a waiter.

There's a fair bit to learn about bar work, nothing to learn about waitering (if its in a pub or relaxed venue) and a hell of a lot to learn if it's silver service waitering.

If its basic waitering or bar work a week of evening & weekends should be plenty. If its silver service I'd say 2 weeks.

Its admirable that you're willing to do this voluntarily but a lot of these jobs will take you on with no experience, especially with the festive season not too far off.

Bar work isn't the kind of job you need work experence first. When I was younger I got into it by doing glassy work during a busy period and they trained me up after that.

Funny I could never do waiter work. I loathed every second of that work but some people think its better then bar work. Each their own.
