Visit From Jesus

Well this experience does sound like hypnagogia, too bad there isn't more information on drug-related effects of hypnagogia.

You ever gone a day without eating? That amount of time on its own without food may not be enough to cause full hallucinations

I am anorexic, and often go weeks without eating. I have never hallucinated from it, although it does create a strange state of consciousness. Feels good.

^After doing a brief search, I couldn't really find much about hunger induced hallucinations. But you do say it creates an altered state of consciousness, so I'm assuming that combined with the lack of sleep would be the prime suspects here.
