OK, so plugging my camera into infected computers in Asia has finally given me a Trojan on the memory card. This means I can no longer upload pics to Travelpod. Most of the photos are already on a stick but about fifty or so aren't.

Do I have a solution to get rid of the virus WITHOUT losing my pics or do I simply buy another memory card?

Answers on a postcard....

And thank you.

I've never dealt with that situation and we don't know what kind of 'infection' it is, I'd guess the specific name would be required to know what could be done. Are you sure it's infected ? it could be some kind of formatting problem.

If it were me and the photos where important I'd get another card and try and recover the lost ones later, it's been a while but I know you can get recovery software specifically for memory cards as Mrs A deleted a whole load of stuff once and I had to recover it.

If you can get access to a computer you can boot from a linux livecd, you ought to be able to get any photos off the infected card safely, from within linux.

Definately just use a fresh memory card in the mean time, switch it to read-only when you put it into anything other than your camera, or before you plug the camera into a computer via usb to take off photos ;)

This happened to me when i bought a 'new' sd card off ebay. Turns out it wasn;t new, the guy had just put it back in the packaging even though he had used it, which had gotten it infected. It is very easy to recover any deleted photos, I managed to pull 50 off that card which proved beyond a doubt the cunt had used it for his work before selling it. (also why you shouldn't sell off your old memory cards unless you want some stranger looking at all the photos you thought you had deleted)

Thanks Ceres. Don't do Linux so don't understand that.

Also what/how do I switch to read only?

I'm thick, apologies.

There should be a little tab on the edge of the card which slides down to 'lock' it, making it read-only, so nothing will be able to infect it, but you can still copy the pictures off it. If you are connecting the camera to a computer via usb cable, do this before you plug it in, or before you put the card into a card reader to take off the photos. It only needs to be unlocked when you're actually taking photos, or deleting them from the camera itself.

That tab only tells the operating system that it can't write, any well written virus will just ignore that. Also, the problem is viruses on the card already, which could easily effect the computer you plug it into.

As for the linux thing; that's just a way to copy off the files without risking infecting your computer. Basically you burn something like this to disk, restart your computer and it should boot up into a working linux desktop that is much more immune to viruses.
