Virginia Tech shooting

Today in my hometown of Blacksburg, VA, a lone gunman killed at least 21 people and wounded at least 29, on the Virginia Tech campus. The first shooting occured in the largest dormitory building on campus. The shooter then went into a science and engineering building and continued the killing. At this point its not clear whether he was killed by police or by his own hand.
This is the second deadly shooting at Virginia Tech this school year, in August, a guy I went to high school with, William Morva, who escaped from police custody, at the local hospital, shot and killed an unarmed hospital security guard, and then the next morning he shot and killed a Montgomery County deputy, who was searching for Morva. Virginia Tech was closed for the day and Morva was captured later in the day. He now faces the death penalty.
Tough year for Virginia Tech, my thoughts and condolences go out to the families and friends of the dead and wounded.

I also live and attend school in blacksburg. Everyones pretty much plastered to their tv sets, just waiting for the victims to start being announced...

thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who might have been effected my this tragedy

i've got 2 friends that go to VT. Talked to them this morning. They are still in shock from yesterday.

my prayers are with everyone in VT.

Well, you know what? I'm always glad I don't go to school in Australia.

Worst school shooting in American history; yes, let's turn this into another anti-America thread. What an ass.

My thoughts are the same but I'm sure CB didn't mean to be an ass. She's been around as long as me and she's not one to post stuff to pick a fight. Knowing the context, I'm sure she meant otherwise...

Anyone else who said it though I'd feel the same though.

Anyways. I have alot of friends who go to this school and I applied here. I also may transfer here fairly soon. I'm very close to VT and this kind of thing is pretty tragic. Classes were shut down at my school, security was beef'd up, and alot of kids left school. It's amazing how the day before everyone was outside and even today when I walk down the campus there's not many people out.

It's pretty sad. No one I knew personally was hurt (although I know some people who lost friends), and everyone from my specific county has been reported to be okay, but a few of them were actually in the same floor as the first two killings and I had some mates in the building next to the engineering hall.

What a shame.

On a side note, I was suprised at the speeches by Tim Kaine and George Bush. Having heard *many* speeches from both, my expectations were that Kaine would give a goofy and weak speech while Bush would give a strong, ableit constructed, speech. Instead, Bush gave a lousy speech that was clearly not written by him while Kaine gave a powerful speech that seemed to have obviously been done by mostly him.

Regardless, Bush's presence is the important thing (as is Kaine's) but I was just a little shocked to see that Bush gave as bad as speech as he did and Kaine gave such a good one. Maybe my expectations were too high of Bush, having heard him give some particularly strong speeches before, but still.

Although Kaine was still pretty goofy and far-out, as always. I was quite suprised he was able to give such a good speech though, especially about a matter like this.

Whoa there boyo... I wasn't attempting to turn anything into an anti-American anything. It was more a comment on gun laws than anything, and yes that is a typically American problem, but it doesn't mean that I'm hanging shit on your entire country.

That was basically my response to a really horrific scenario where I don't know what I'd be able to do if it were happening to me. Fuck, think about it objectively... I'm glad that the chance of this sort of incident happening over here is much much smaller than it is over there, which, hey, is definitely something that I am thankful for.

But anyway, back onto the topic at hand, I reiterate:

Condolences to the victims and families, which is much more important than any petty arguments that you wish to bring up.

Oh and by the way, TheodoreRoosevelt you get the award for being about the 100th person on bluelight to mistake me for a chick... (actually there have probably been a hell of a lot more than that ;)). I am a man baby!

CB :)

My heart goes out to the victems and familys affected, so sorry to hear about this.

take care everyone.

6 years I thought you were a man and you've never corrected me before...

MY REALITY IS SHATTERED!

As for gun laws, in my opinion, your wrong. In crowbar's opinion, your wrong. This thread isn't about gun control, and I would like to keep it that way. Feel free to pm me about gun control.

To say one, isolated incident is a reflection of our country or our policy as a whole is ludicrous. Maybe for all gun homicides you can push that, but for one, freak incident like this, is stupid. Remember, bombs are illegal too but that didn't stop Kansas. Besides how offensive such a comment can construed from someone who supports gun rights after such an event, it isn't really relevant to an anti-gun argument. What if I said we should kill all koreans because a korean was behind this incident? If we had killed all koreans a week ago, this never would've happened, after all.

Anyways...

Anyone going to the candlelight vigils? Every school in the nation is having one tommorow apparently. I plan to stop by.

Basically, my point was that this isn't the Current Events and Politics forum, and there isn't an agenda behind every post...

CB.

Again, I don't want to turn focus away from the issue at hand. But given the population of the U.S. (300,000,000), and given the number of mass random campus shootings every year (Less than one per year, statistically speaking), I think your odds of dying by crashing into a kangaroo are higher than my risk of going to school. ;)

Tragic headlines created? Many. But over all increased risk to your average American student compared to other countries? Negligible.

^ Wow! You Americans get waaaaay too defensive awfully easily! It was a half a sentance for for fucks sake, take your hands off your dicks and calm down..

On the topic: It is indeed fucked that a group of innocent students and teachers have been targeted in another random act of mass murder.

While I would never wish death upon anyone, I still think its a shame that such a killing spree took place in a school, umongst peacful people, instead of at the next Repblican national convention, or better yet a NRA convention...

Lol, Last time I checked more people in America are shot OUTSIDE of school. A lot more. So as soon as you step foot outside of the relatively safe schoolgrounds the stastics sway in the favour of you getting shot over me driving into a kangaroo. And the entire population of America does not attend high school or college.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! This topic is getting needlessly argumentative. The kangaroo remark was a joke to try to dissociate myself with crowbar's needless defensiveness. But the can of worms was already opened, so I decided to point out that, statistically speaking, dangerous things like lightning and driving make the risk of getting shot in school viritually a non-issue, and that, statistically speaking, school shootings aren't something the average person needs to take into consideration while going about their day, because they are so incredibly rare wherever you are.

Yes it's shame one type of person died instead of another type of person. 8)

Why were they peaceful, just because they were in school? And if you don't understand the logistics over why a shooting spree like that COULD NOT happen at an NRA convention, then you sir, are retarded.

lol i've lived in Australia all my life and only ever seen i think 2 kangaroos in my whole 24 years.
