Question about taking Viibryd and risperidone at the same time.
My issues are bipolar with a kind of mixed state (racing dark thoughts as well as depression), fibromyalgia, and OCD.
I've been taking risperidone (dopamine antagonist) for years which has been necessary for the racing dark thoughts... I can't sleep without it. Currently on 2 mg/night.
I've also been taking Cymbalta for a couple years but looking to get off of it, because it increases racing thoughts and has required me to increase my risperidone dose. It has also increased addictive behavior---I've had a caffeine addiction going increasingly out of control, never a problem before the Cymbalta, and I've had to stop using opiod medications for the fibromyalgia because I can't control myself with them---abuse them. Again, never a problem before the Cymbalta.
My doctor just prescribed Viibryd to replace the Cymbalta. He's a general practitioner and currently due to low finances I don't have a good psychiatrist. I think my question may be pretty tricky so I will continue to search for a psychiatrist that takes medicare, but also thought I might as well stop here---have always gotten good information.
I was hunting for information on Viibryd and it appears to be indicated for bipolar, "similar to Abilify" according to this information. I thought that Abilify affected dopamine, so now I'm concerned that Viibryd and risperidone are going to interact. Maybe this will be good -- maybe I can lower the dose of risperidone or get off of it entirely (I don't like some its side-effects and the risk of tardive dyskinesia).
The Viibryd website says it's a partial agonist of the 5-HT (1A) receptor. What does that mean?
Can any experts here comment?
Thanks,
Mike
