Hey everyone, I'm thinking about going to Vietnam. Never been before so any information, tips advice etc would be a great help.

Probably starting in Hanoi, then move to Sapa Valley and then onto Halong Bay for a couple of days (may do that on a cruise for ease).

(mods if you could copy over the several replies from the gibbering section that would be a great help - Thanks in advance).

Pretty much the responses I was expecting :D

My biggest concern is the Food, Sapa Valley a lot of Donkey is consumed but I'm thinking due to the mixed religions there should be a lot of veggie options on the go. Would kill me having to eat rice for a week.

Avoid Hanoi! Worst place I've ever been. Other MMV.

More tips when I'm not stealing wifi. Cunts haven't got much of a connection, I might even have a word.

I very much enjoyed Hanoi, very charming city, the old quarter is very nice, lovely buildings and great food.

The best place by a country mile is Hoi An, it's in the middle of the country, so beautiful, the buildings are amazing and you can rent a boat and go around this sort of swamp they have. Brilliant place that was. Met a lovely girl there though but being a shy teenager I didn't do anything with her, regretted it for years.

MK the fact that you visited Hanoi as a shy teenager may have clouded your view somewhat ? I have heard so many mixed reviews about the place ....

In all honesty it was great, it's chaotic and noisy like pretty much every city in SE Asia, but the old quarter is seriously nice, it's much a nicer city than Saigon.

Hoi An is the nicest place in Vietnam I reckon, splendid little town. I also very much enjoyed Hue, but I'm a war history fanatic and spent the day in the ruins of the palace, digging around, I found empty cases from 5,56 mm and 7,62 and pieces of sharpnel. I came back home with a huge bag full of empty rifle cases and other stuff. I very much enjoyed that place, it was also the spot were I had a few joints as my parents had left me alone for the day and I had some Moroccan hash I'd brought with me from home. I was walking around listening to The Doors in my cassette walman and having a few puffs from my spliff. Given Vietnam had been my dream destination for years that was for me as good as it could get. I also have to mention that Apocalypse Now was and still is by far my favourite movie. For me being in the Hue castle where the harshest battles of the Tet offensive had been fought, picking up empty shells while smoking hash and listening to The End and Jimi Hendrix was as awesome as an experience as I could dream of.

As far as seaside location go, we went to this island off the coast of Nha Trang, called Ile de la Balene or Whale Island, fucking amazing place, I had my own bungalow(full of scorpions, spiders and bugs) and managed to buy weed off this bloke who worked for the PADI diving center. Was ace, one of the best islands I ever been too and I've been three times to Malaysia, twice to Thailand and once in Indonesia.

^nice, (spotted Whale Island when I was looking online) I've been to Thailand a few times and was actually thinking about going back (Samui as didn't really enjoy Bangkok) but thought I would try something new. Malaysia and Vietnam have been on my to do list for a while now so thought what the hell.

Haha - the goatee started as a bet, who could keep it the longest. My mates missus made him shave his off within about two days, I've had mine for years - was going to grow a beard and then have it transplanted to my baldy nut.

I'll just stick to sex with my partner, he doesn't charge that much and I know won't nick my wallet, watch if I nod off.

Vietnam is looking into being the first Asian country to recognise gay marriage, I assume you know this.

Can't add much to what Kenny said, except a violent disagreement about Hanoi. It makes Bangkok look like a pastoral idyll.

Hoi An, great, buy a suit, buy two, everyone (except me) does. Also has the most wonderful South China Sea beach...but not the main one. There's an out of town beach we had all to ourselves. Except the inevitable hawker.

You will leave Vietnam with the words "buy something" ringing in your ears.

I would probably have hated HCM (Saigon) if it were not for previously experiencing Hanoi. The two are the very definition of the phrase chalk and cheese. You'll see what I mean. Hanoi is enough to put the staunchest commie (me) off communism. Spent six months going round the world, S America, Aus, SE Asia, and Hanoi was the only place we went where we were prevented from going places. The army/state own the central square and you aren't allowed in. Which can involve massive detours if trying to get to the other side of the city.

Did I tell you Hanoi was shit btw?

How long you going for? I was there for three weeks and for me that was plenty long enough. I was in Laos for a month and that was far too short (going back next year).

We took night buses in Vietnam to save a nights accommodation. They have beds and with your Valium you will be able to sleep and thus miss all the near accidents your driver has.

Bit stoned, I'll stop rambling now.

^I do understand what your saying - I think its one of those places you have to experience for yourself to understand? We really didn't enjoy Bangkok was just a bit too much.

I may have to have a rethink about my next vacation - probably heard more negatives than positives about Hanoi.

Oh and...Halong Bay (especially) and Sapa are notorious for being misty/cloudy...forewarned is less disappointed. Both are bloody amazing places though. I know half a dozen separate people who have been to Halong Bay and none of us got good clear weather.

Thank you - really hadn't read that anywhere. Knowing how much I enjoy photography it would sort of screw my trip up not being able to take loads of clear photos.

Time for a rethink
