Ah, I see the thread has been revived! since my last point, I had the chance to play blunder through FFXII: International in Japan, only to give up an hour in because the only "international" part of this game is the CG, everything else is still in Japanese. ugh.
I think there are two camps of FF fans.
The first camp (the majority) started playing from FF1, found the series really improving at 6 and 7 (the latter added some pizaz with this now thing called 3D), then had their world shattered at 8 because the game stopped being about little boy loves little girl and saves world.
Then there is the camp that started around 8, 9, or even 10; backtracked, were underwhelmt by the simplicity of pre-7 games, and so, lacking the nostalgia that coloured the judgement of the other camp, were able to enjoy the post-7 games.
I am of the latter, of course. I started at 8. I think 7 is good but has absolutely nothing on Tactics, 8, 10, or 12.
