if you didnt see last weeks Beat mag, here is an interview with Mark EG!
Firstly, tell us about how you got into music and why?
My real addiction to electronic music began when I put the radio on one night under the pillow and heard a late night show playing all the early Chicago house, Detroit techno and 80’s electro. From that moment on, I knew that’s what I wanted to be involved in. Then acid house completely blew me away in 88. From that point I got into illegal pirate radio as a means to be able to play people the music I loved, was chased out of flats in Manchester by a few ‘Department of Trade and Industry’ blokes with a Technics 1210 under my arm and then fell into the club game. It just got progressively more insane from there!
And what about your musical direction. I get the feeling it is kind of a bit of anything as long as it’s hard, right?
Well since the acid house thing I’ve played everything from Belgian techno, trance, electronica, hard techno, minimal, hard trance, hardstyle, schranz and even ambient. My taste in dance music is about as wide as it gets and I think life is too short to be blinkered by genres. In fact, genres are very dangerous – as they run the risk of becoming fashion and then they will die. Obviously certain clubs are suited to certain styles so I try to choose the right styles for the various clubs I play and then take risks within those constraints in order to try and push the music forward. I mean there’s no sense in playing minimal in a hardcore club or you’re gonna be leaving the place with no legs!
Tell us about your label, what’s happening there?
After the success of my techno productions with my girl Chrissi under the name The Anxious, we decided to start a vinyl label called Blackout Audio. Over the last ten years we’ve played host to such talented and world renound artists that sometimes I’ve had to pinch myself to check I’m not dreaming! Recently the industry has undergone a massive change in the format in which it’s sold so this year we put the label on hold to regroup. Meanwhile Blackout Audio is also a website with a huge message forum that’s been going for around 10 years. It’s quite grounding to be able to communicate with true fans of the music on a regular basis, argue about topics and issues as if we were all sitting in the one big lounge eating tacos and drinking tea.
In 2010, what are some of your inspirations and influences? What motivates you?
Simple – music! When I see all the industry bullshit that some people bring to the table, I simply lock myself in my studio and listen. Whilst so many artists and DJ’s out there use music as a way to fuel their own egos, charm the ladies or to get rich quick, there’s nothing more satisfying or inspiring than hearing something come out of those speakers that’s been made with a passion and for the right reasons. Unfortunately the more you get involved in music, the more you see people use things for their own gain, ruin the music and then look for the next thing to stamp on – whether thats the music itself, a hard working promoter or the people. Realising what is important in the music industry is what drives me and has done for the last 25 years in electronic music.
Tell us what’s been happening in the studio? Any cool mixes, EPs, albums or remixes coming up?
I actually edit a big magazine over here in the UK called Core Magazine so it’s been kinda tough to find the time in the studio recently! But over the last few months we’ve managed to focus on developing a style called ‘industrial hardstyle’, that tries to get away from some of the typical carbon copy hardstyle that you’re hearing out there at the moment. Tracks we’ve done recently have been with DJ Thera from Theracords, Busho from Digitally Infected and Thilo & Evanti from Analogue is Dead. Mind you we did manage to sneak in a head banging schranz track the other week with Instigator too! There will also be more Anxious stuff on the way as well so watch this space. As for mix albums, I have a interesting four CD project coming up with Tidy Trax that will be all over the TV this Christmas called ‘Hard Dance Anthems’.
Apparently you don’t mind some on stage antics! What can we expect?
I don’t mind kippers either! No seriously now, some DJ’s take themselves so seriously that it’s cringe worthy, so instead I bugger off in the other direction and just try to entertain people. There’s such beauty in music but there’s also a lot of humour. I think it began in the early 90’s at a huge rave in the UK called Helter Skelter when I picked a record up off the decks and smashed it over my head. The crowd went bonkers! And it’s all developed from there really – to the point I’ve ended up in A+E on numerous occasions from injuring myself through doing silly stuff on stage. The main thing is that people not only hear sounds they’re simply not expecting but also see things they’ve never witnessed before in a club environment! The question is, can Melbourne handle it?!
