Very sick after shroom trip

there are quite a few varieties that will induce hallucinations in the toxic state and are not safe to eat.

Kudos, care to follow up on this one?
How sure are you about the source of the mushrooms, what I mean is has this batch been proven legitimate by friends or did you trust someone buying these who might not know their stuff?
AFAIK there are toxic mushrooms that cause hallucinations, bpayne, but I don't think those are Psilocybin-shroom related so it is not relevant here.
Therefore I think the chance is bigger the mushrooms were contaminated. But it's hard to figure this out.

I've seen a similar thread about getting sick on mushrooms recently. I'm guessing at this point that--assuming they're actually a psilocybin variety--penicillin allergies could possibly cause bad reactions such as this. Just a theory on my part...

The mushrooms were standard cubensis, purchased from a reliable source and then taken with a friend from the same bag (who experienced no such symptoms post-trip).

Obviously, I didn't die. But I was deathly ill for about ten days. I went to the doctor and got tested for strep throat, but the result was negative. The very high fever was sustained into the last couple of days, as did the severe throat pain.

I'm not allergic to Penicillin, as was suggested here. So could this have been the result of a moldy mushroom? Or just a virus of some sort picked up during the trip?

Sometimes people just get sick, if you do drugs on a quasi-regular basis, you may get sick after doing them with no causal relationship between the drug and the illness. 10 days of body aches, intense nausea, etc sounds like the flu to me. Of couse one can get any number of various bugs from eating unwashed vegetables, psychedelic or otherwise, which is certainly a possiblity.

As far as psych's & immune function are concerned, I doubt traditional psych's would cause a decrease in immune function unless the user has a very strong belief that they will. In which case it wouldn't so much be the drug, but the user. Similar to talking yourself into being sick while trying to fake to avoid going to school at a young age. MDMA however could potentially as I've read some info, though tenative, about amphetamine salts (adderal) and methylphenidate (ritalin) causing decreased immune function. Granted MDMA is quite far removed from amphetamine salts, but I would not be surprised if all amphetamines caused decreased immune function, particularly if used in a large single dose as opposed to frequent small doses, though the latter are also being proven more and more unhealthy

I would say it's entirely possible that shrooms can impair your immune system because the experience costs a lot of energy. Especially strong experiences. Lots of times I have felt refreshed the next day but it also kind of wears me out. The refreshment seems psychological which will lift you up, but physically it may be draining. Does it just seem like this to me or would you agree?

I get what you're saying about psychological refreshment, and typically after a good strong trip I am pretty worn out. Though, I don't imagine that there would be any significant decrease in immune function because of mushrooms. I feel that sickness can pop up at any point, and assuming it was the mushrooms did it looks like bad causation to me. I would be interested to hear more on the subject though.

moldy shrooms?

you may not have noticed that you good fungi ( if all five grams were real) had bad fungi (mold) on them. Even in minute amounts many molds can make one very sick.
I have always felt great after tripping on shrooms.

So you took the mushrooms with a friend concurrently, and subsequently got sick?

I've had mushrooms about 10-15 times, all in 2008. I often experienced the exact same symptoms, and got sick not once, but several times, all after concurrently taking mushrooms with one particular friend. I honestly think there's some type of cause-effect at work here, no matter how improbable that sounds.

The reason for this is I would *always* get sick, one to two days after taking mushrooms with that friend. This would take place in different locations, the beach, a club, once in Mexico (which was the time I got the most sick), and while all of those are locations with potential exposure to pathogens, I took mushrooms in the same location (the beach) twice, once while tripping with my friend, once by myself. My friend was still present, but not on mushrooms. I was also on twice the amount, 3.5 g, as the first time, and yet I did not get ill in the subsequent weeks.

I'd also, since the last time tripping with him in Mexico, gone to the desert where I tripped on 4.2 g, and did not subsequently get sick. Considering that *every* time I tripped with my friend on mushrooms, I got sick, and that there were times when I tripped independently and did not get sick, I think there's at least some chance of correlation. What that is, I'm not willing to postulate.

Although I don't want to put you in a situation which would potentially endanger you if my theory is correct, I'd be curious to know if you ever trip, on mushrooms specifically, with your friend again, and also get ill, or if you have any data which would disprove my observations, i.e. you tripped, on mushrooms, with this friend in the past, and did not get ill.

That was the first time I tripped with that friend, but I'll be doing it again soon (though for the record I think this theory is a bit cwazy cwazy).

I'm hoping it was swine flu now.
