Hi bluelighters.

I don't know if this has been asked before but is it a good idea to start taking venlafaxine (Effexor) after quitting tramadol cold turkey?
In the past I took venlafaxina and sertraline for depression and got good results, so maybe this time it can help me again.
I plan to quit tramadol cold turkey. I have done it before but always I last about 10 days before relapsing. In large part I think it's because I miss its antidepressant effects. I find the physical effects of withdrawal totally tolerable but the psychological ones are the ones that affect me a lot. Depression is a thousand times worse than when I started taking tramadol.
Considering that tramadol and venlafaxine have chemical similarities, I thought it would not be a bad idea to take venlafaxine while my neurotransmitters are working normally again.

What do you think? Do you think it would be a good plan?

Hey Supersonic! It wouldn't be a crazy notion to add a Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor (SNRI) to your medication regimen.

While we know a ton about drugs here, something like this, I feel would be better taken up with a prescriber. Psych's especially will probably be able to help you develop a taper strategy.

I think it could be a good thing if you feel like you're struggling with your withdrawal. You can, in a way, taper the Opioid and then taper your SNRI alone afterward. I think taking it piecemeal will help you a lot in terms of stability.

I only say talk to a prescriber because they have the pad, the experience and will help you choose the appropriate drug among all of these different antidepressants.

Thanks man for the reply.

Now it's difficult to get an appointment with a psychiatrist becasue of the coronavirus issue.

I consider (perhaps wrongly) that tramadol is a light opioid and I don't find it's neccesary to go to a doctor for taper. Also, where I live psychiatric treatment is very expensive.

Perhaps this thinking is what lead me not to be able to stop taking and binging on tramadol. You know, seeing tramadol as harmless because, after all, many don't even consider it as an opioid.

I have tried to tapper a couple of times and it always ended up failing and taking all my doses in a couple of days.

I had venlafaxine prescribed in rehab and after I got out, well it drove away the SNRI withdrawal completely (obviously :ROFLMAO:) and the seroquel fixed the opioid part, but I had to withdraw after from both so it wasn't worth it at all, plus had an anti-convulsant and another AD drug.

nevertheless I relapsed in 3 months after getting out of rehab, it's ok in my opinion to take it while you solve the underlying issues which trigger the addiction problem. anyway I got some months now without tramadol, I relapsed for 3-4 days and of course I found myself in the golden standard withdrawal ( as expected ) but got on codeine till the SNRI withdrawal effects faded then I kicked the codeine much more easily ( although I almost got on oxy after feeling again the true opioid) for me tramadol is between oxy and morphine ( as a favourite drug not judging by strength, not even for the opioid feeling it gives, which is very weak, but more for the snri effect mixed with a little bit of opioidness).

you've been struggling with this for a time now, we've discussed about it on your older posts, anyway good luck, you can beat it, when you are clean whenever you see some tramadol "just say no", don't ask yourself why not because you'll instead find some answer for why yes ironically.

honestly if I would take some again I would be back to square one, maybe I got depression under all that but I don't feel super depressed, I just can't resist it, the best I can do is to repeat NO 1010203010 times in my head when I see it or crave it, because I know that in 4 days of consecutive use I will get to the withdrawal part and it will take me 2-3 weeks just to feel right again. been doing it for 7 years + some months

Now I feel like shit because I just bought 12 grams of Tramadol online. I've thought about selling them, because I honestly know that I won't be able to make a proper taper. I feel just like you, not super depressed, I just couldn't resist.

7 years is a lot of time, man. How did you start taking it? Have you ever had a seizure? What about your liver? I have read that abusing this drug is quite harmful to the liver.

Anyway. Thanks for your words man.

you may remember me as morph, I used to mod OD and BDD but forgot my other account and the morph one became jabberwocky, I had one seizure once but it was from combining it with speed and venlafaxine, my liver is in a good shape surprisingly, I had multiple scans and checks because I felt some pain in that area but it may be from another organ, idk how it's called in english

Sorry amigos but I am going to bump this thread since next week I am planning to quit tramadol. My consumption got out of hand. Almost 2 grams every day. Fuck!! I don't know how I haven't seizured yet. Anyway, I will take a dose of venlafaxine every day in the morning and clonazepam for anxiety / insomnia. I will be updating this thread daily, to see if it can be of any help to other users. Wish me luck fellas.
