My mum was wondering how much some of her Tolkien books were worth. Not to sell, but just out of interest.

She's got a 1st Edition, 14th Impression collection of 3 LOTR books, original covers (which changed after the 15th Impression Wiki tells me) along with a 3rd edition 'The Hobbit' (1975 I think) original cover, 1st edition of The Silmarillion (1977) with dustcover, a copy of 'Adventures of Tom Bombadil' (62~65?) with original cover and 'Farmer Giles of Ham' from 65 (5th impression) with original cover. All in near perfect condition save for some spine fading and my mum's address (in 1965) written in the 'Farmer Giles' book.

She's not bothered if they are worth £50 or £500 but was more interested out of curiosity. From what I can gather using my rubbish searching ability the original cover LOTR trilogy seem to be worth £100 or more and both my parents agree they bought the copy of the Silmarillion when it was first published. All are hardback.

If anyone happens to know a thing or two about this I'd be most grateful. While I sometimes waste an hour at lunch watching some crappy 'bargain hunt' show on TV, this isn't my thing.

Thanks a lot :) It's her birthday today too, so it'd make a nice suprise if they are valuable ;)

/edit
I've found this place which has a 1962 trilogy on sale for $900, and a mismatched 3 (ie not from the same printing run) for $650! Okay, I thought maybe all the books together they might be $300, but that much for just the trilogy?! Or have I just found a crazy website?

I don't know but i am interessted because i have one from 1974 in perfect condition.
Which book? LOTR came out in 55ish and the Silmarillion in 77. From what I've found there's a major drop in value when you go to second edition, because the cover changes.

Perhaps I've been spending too much time watching 'Bargain Hunt' at lunchtime on BBC1, but it is surprising how much people can get for what's lying around their house.

[edit]
