Vail Valley's state senator wants more control of medical pot

State Sen. Al White's bill would cut out individual distributors and create a state monopoly

Glenwood Springs, CO Colorado

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. — State Sen. Al White says he will introduce a bill to regulate Colorado's medical marijuana industry by cutting out individual distributors and creating a state monopoly.

The Republican from Hayden says the state's failure to regulate the industry has raised concerns that illicit drug cartels are using local dispensaries as quasi-legal outlets for black market marijuana. White says there are also concerns that people who don't need it for health reasons are getting it.

Colorado voters approved medical marijuana use in 2000 but it is up to local governments to set regulations for dispensaries.

How stupid, its better in the hands of private growers who can spend more time and attention to each individual plant, resulting in higher quality bud.

I really wish I could have a job like that, selling to medical dispenaries lol, plus I'd grow some for myself, and it would be legal. Would be my dream job.

why the complaints? This is a step in the right direction for straight up legalisation of marijuana.

^ I agree. It's only a matter of time before the government begins regulating it, and we have known that from the start.

Part of this law proposes that anyone wishing to open a dispensary must pass an FBI background check - not a bad idea. I don't personally have my medical license but plenty of my friends do and I know that I would rather be spending my money with legit locals rather than criminals.

The up side to having so many stoners in CO, and therefore so many dispensaries and supporters of medical marijuana is that no one is just going to lay down and let this republican steam roll us.

^ You raise some pretty good points there. It just hard not be skeptical that when the Government regulates such an industry that they aren't going to make it as difficult as possible for anyone trying to get a card and probably tighten restrictions on people growing their own and how much they can buy at once.

^Yeah, remember the first time they "regulated" marijuana-"It's fine guys, you just need to get one of these special tax stamps..."
