Using marijuana as a tool to quit harder drugs

I have had great success in the past with controlling multi-hour coke cravings in which I was close to caving in. A few puffs and a fear would overtake me and realize how stupid that was. I have now had the same success with opiate craving that would not subside. Has anyone else had luck with this? I would like to hear if it has helped anyone else. It has been a miracle for me.

getting high is getting high if youre using it as a crutch its unhealthy no matter what substance it is.

Marijuana wasnt just a tool, it made me quit smoking cigarettes. Personally, I consider tobacco products a "hard drug" due to the nicotine making them so addicting. I was smoking a pack every 2 days by the age of 18 and smoking herb everyday. I didnt enjoy anything more than sparking a cig after every bowl. My cigarette smoking slowly started to decrease because I didnt enjoy it as much anymore. I went to a rave in the beginning Dec2010 and decided to make that my last day of continuous cig smoking. That was basically my cold turkey. Smoking weed really helped the irritability and headaches. I only smoked 5 cigarettes between then and New Years Eve, but I didnt really enjoy it. New Years Day is my official quit date. Havent touched a cigarette since. And thats how marijuana helped me quit smoking cigarettes(:

I found psychedelics to be a powerful tool. This is the only drug I really believe is. They can open your eyes and allow you to have a break through. They can help you get out of the rut you're in.

yeah weed made me stop using other drugs because when i was high i saw how they were bad for me. for some reason i never saw how weed was bad for me though (and at the level i was using it, it was quite bad) and after i quit weed i went to other drugs.

my final thoughts are, its definitely not the best way to quit other drugs but it can work. just make sure you dont just start abusing weed though and dont start using other drugs when you stop weed.

Your right its definantly not the best way to quit but I would rather smoke than pop handfuls of oxy. For me its a god sent. I have tried strong hallucinogens. LSD. Mescaline ayahuasca but nothing could provide me more than two months of abstinence except aya it gave me 3.5 months with proper diet and abstinence before and after. All in all marijuana is the only one that can kill prolonged cravings on the spot, its been a gift. BTW for opiates I use it for PAWS because it makes the acute withdrawals worse for me.

Yeah, I've quit cigarettes for extended periods of time before (usually a year) and weed always fills the void. Haven't had to quit harder drugs than cigarettes, but if I had to quit drinking for some reason I'm sure I'd start smoking a lot more weed as well. It probably isn't healthy to replace one addiction with another, but it can be useful in the short term to deal with withdrawal symptoms.

I've found that when I smoke weed it just makes me want to do other, better drugs because of the 'small' high that it gives off. If this works for you, great, but I feel that if I ever smoked weed again eventually I'd be going back to benzos and other drugs.

i used it along with moderate doses of DXM and clonazepam to get off of an oxy habit. so i'd say yes, it's fantastic for a variety of symptoms.

thats how it is for me.

i think the question of this thread applies to using weed to stay off coke or opiates or something...benzos are not a hard drug, they are much weaker and less euphoric than alcohol, so i cant imagine someone using weed to stay off benzos, or vice versa - the drugs are too different for one to help with staying off the other IMO. But since weed mildly affect the same dopamine areas as coke and dope and cigarettes and speed, it helps not only with basic physical craving. but does give you that boost of enlightenment to see how wrong it is to evn crave hard drugs..

of course the problem with this is , what happens when you have no weed? bang you go back to hard drugs. using weed to get off hard drugs is better than nothing , but probably one of the silliest and sloppiest of many other methods [drugs are a quick fix...thats the problem...so using a quick fix to fix an addiction to another quick fix can end in a confusing spiral...regadless of what shrinks tell you about prozac and whatnot]

if you have the time and money, i say smoke your ass off. but most addicts dont. so better to try the harder alterate routes like long walks and meditation, learn to appreciate life without a chemical buzz.

im nowere near this point but i know it is best.

definitely, when I'm sober or drunk i sometimes want to do drugs, but weed makes me feel like they're bad. it's because i know that already in the back of my head, but weed makes the thought feel more important, i can't just push it back, you know?

heroin addict. weed saved me. helped me get clean. now im using it as we speak going cold turkey and its not as horrible as without it.

weed does make you keep/form the same habits that will get you stuck using harder drugs though. if you stick to a reasonable amount of bud it will help more than hurt while detoxing/staying clean.

it seems to be the case. but you need a lot of moolah to be medicating constantly like that. for me it doesn't seem sustainable.

Dude if you don't think benzos are a hard drug then you should try upping your dosage to about 25mg alprozolam a day for the next year, quit cold turkey and report back. I would much rather come off a coke habit than heavy benzos.

As far as using weed to get clean goes I pick up some new habit every year or two and inevitably decide I have to put it down and weed is always a great transition for me. Helps with nausea, anxiety, and pain, I can't think of anything better.

using marijuana to taper off other drugs that youre physically addicted to/abuse frequently is definitely a good idea and can be effective. itll take your mind off your desire to use the drug and can even take the edge off the withdrawals. the thing is once you finally get off it and the cravings are gone you might be left with a mental addiction to weed and youll continue to use it because thatll be your new drug of choice. but thats ok though, its better than to be dependent on harder drugs that if you continue to harshly abuse will start corroding your body and give you health issues.

Weed helps to an extent in that I'm satisfying the urge to "get high", but that doesn't take you too far. If you have a very specific type of craving for something other than weed, I don't find it quite scratches the itch. In fact, I increasingly find that weed alone just makes me desire opiates more than I otherwise might.

That's ridiculous. Weaker than alcohol; maybe if you're comparing a pint of liquor to a couple valium. Ever had 6+ mg of xanax?
Besides "euphoria" is subjective.

benzos arent hard drugs

its like saying aspirin is a hard drug because you can OD on it.

You sir are incorrect and probably pretty inexperienced with benzos. Benzos aren't considered hard drugs cause you can od on them. I actually believe it is quite difficult to od on benzos, you'll just sleep for a long time. I guess technically that's an overdose but you won't die or anything. I know for a fact you have never had withdrawals from benzos either so quite frankly I don't think you should be speaking on the matter. Plus your comment provided nothing for this thread. IME cannabis is a must when it comes to withdrawals and periods of abstinence. I am speakin from someone who uses opiates so it helps with the nausea and some insomnia. I also just love cannabis as it is.
