US Life Expectancy Declines Due to Opioid Overdoses

They are deaths of despair. I really think this is the new normal as more people are left out of society due to automation and the collapse of trade type jobs. Not everyone is cut out for college

Not everyone is cut out for college
I was teaching at a large midwestern state school and one of my colleagues said that in a faculty meeting. The rest of the faculty and the dean ganged up on him for saying that. I totally agreed with him, but as a young, untenured assistant professor, I kept my lip zipped. Also from my experience living in Vermont, one of the states hardest hit by the opioid crisis, the economy there is completely stagnant. If you're entering the workforce and don't already have a job, good luck! There's basically nothing for people to do except get high.
