Hey Admins...

I was wondering if/when we could get the URL posting button fixed. It asks for the URL and then posts the code using the actual URL as the link text. In the past it would have a second window pop up, asking for the link text. This made it a lot easier rather than having to highlight the bit between the brackets and replace.

If you make this happen, your funeral parade will be like that of Kim Jong Il.

:D

I'm pretty sure he is talking about the insert link button. It doesn't work like it used to. Now you have to manually delete the URL and write whatever description there, if you wish for the link to appear as some other text. It used to automatically highlight the url so all you had to do was type in what you wanted the link to appear as. I know it's a minor problem, and it's more of a pain that a problem. I did however have a hard time remembering if it was the first or second writing of the URL that needed to be deleted and replaced with the text I wanted it to appear as.

I can't replicate any problems with this; it's working perfectly in quick reply and advanced for me.

type a word, highlight it, press the link button, type or paste URL, hit OK:

testing

press the link button, type or paste URL, hit OK:

www.ubuntu.com

type a URL and hit preview:

www.mozilla.org

OK wait, I get it now. that seems ages ago since it worked like that. all you need to do is what I did in my first example: just type what you want to show as a URL, highlight it, and then hit the button.

^ at some point in the past, clicking the 'link' icon with nothing highlighted would prompt the user twice - once for the url and once for the text to appear as the link.

Yes, it does.

You're talking about the optional field that some vB codes have.

There used to be a second pop-up that gave you the option to either leave the link as a URL, or embed the link in a particular word.

As felix said, just type the word, highlight it, hit the link button, insert the link and the result is the same.

I understand that. That's what I have been doing. My question to the admins is since we have upgraded software, is there any way to regain that function? I'm sure it's part of the software.

Hmmm... not sure if it's simply how Version 4 of vB works as it's default, or if there's an option available that can be tweaked (or if the functionality we all remember came via an additional mod)

You should be aware that vB users who upgraded from 3.x to 4.x have complained that certain features have been lost. Not sure if this is one of them.

fwiw, the claim they changed the default behaviour because: "Same way it works in the majority of email clients and word processing applications."

agree or disagree, it was a conscious decision.

Wow, I never knew that it could be done like felix describes here. <-- I just had to do it there to try it out. ;)

I was going to add this to the Bluelighting Tips but some smart guy already posted the method here.

^ Yes, I suppose typing out here in my previous post would have been less annoying than highlighting a word and clicking a button. ;)
